There have been many stereotypes and wrongful perceptions about nurses and has grown over the years. Nurses in the public eye are viewed mostly as females who help and comfort those in need. Nurses in the public eye are female who are often viewed as sex symbols or objects. Nurses are also viewed as inferior or invisible when compared to the doctor who is often times viewed as a man. The media has made people view nurses as a female who is young, hot, and is often below and follows the orders of a handsome smart male doctor. A perfect example of the way the media portrays a nurse is the picture from above. This picture is from this year’s Halloween ad from the store called Party City. This paper will go more in depth about how this image is wrongful in today’s society and how the public image of nursing has to change.

Also she is wearing a pair of net hosiery socks with high heels. Her whole outfit is the stereotypical image of a sexy nurse. This woman is tarnishing the image of nursing by wearing such clothing items. This shows the public that nurses are viewed as a sex object rather than what they actually are. This by any means is not the professional way of how a nurse looks and or should be portrayed as. A few qualities that Black and Chitty define in the book as a professional nurse is someone who can understand a body of knowledge have ethical standards and have specialized education (Black & Chitty, 2014, p. 65). With that said, having ethical standards does not mean wearing a much sexualized outfit but a more professional and ethically one. A correct image of a typical nurse’s outfit should include white scrubs that show no cleavage. Also wearing gym shoes instead of heals is professionally correct.
