Can you imagine shopping for furniture and a sales associate stops and says "You 're beautiful, if you don 't mind me asking, what race are you?" I respond proudly "I 'm African American." In return, he say 's "Oh wow you 're pretty to be African American, I just knew you were mixed with something. I 'll direct you to the clearance center." When will people realize that we aren 't beautiful in spite of our diversity, we are beautiful and powerful because of it. As a nation, we have to start with educating our youth, challenging adults, and inspiring our nation to challenge social norms.

Unfortunately, this is the only time it 's discussed. I had a co-worker that I consider a good associate ask me "Why do you see so many African American women with babies and no husbands?" Some people would have been offended, but I welcomed her question. I answered her question to the best of my ability, and simply let her know that It 's isn 't always the case. My mother and father are married, and if she had more friends from different backgrounds she too would see that everything isn 't how it appears. I hope having that discussion with my coworker changed her perception of the topic. Culture and ethnicity should be celebrated in the work place. I believe that having potlucks, or a culture day could help. It would allow people to ask question that they may have without feeling intrusive or inappropriate. Expanding the cultural and diversity trainings to focus more on equal opportunities for men and women is another good idea. Furthermore, discontinuing the section on job applications that asks you to identify your sex, race, or ethnicity. I 'm often apprehensive when it comes to identifying at all, and I 'm sure I 'm not the only person. The process is very uncomfortable, and I question the reasoning behind it.
