In 2008 the comedy film Step Brothers starring Will Farrell as Brennen Huff and John Reilly as Dale Doback was released. The team who directed the movie Step Brothers also directed Talladega Nights, they both have Will Farrell as the main character, which is one reason why this movie is considered a legendary comedy. This film has a lot of great scenes that show the comedy and the emotions from the main characters. The films comedy, character development, claim and good acting makes Step Brothers an entertaining film that will make you want to watch it over and over again. During the entire film, there are very few dull and serious moments. The audience can laugh and see the friendship between the actors even outside of the movie. Such as the scene when they are sleep walking and bring the Christmas tree and presents upstairs to their parent’s room as their parents are arguing whether or not to wake them up. Will Farrell is known as one of the funniest and best actors in the world. The characters provide enough emotional and humor to the film that keeps the audience laughing. Every scene is full of jokes and humor which keeps the film entertaining and interesting from the beginning to the end. It is undeniable that the audience will not be able to help themselves from laughing during this film. From start to finish the movie there is never a scene where you are not laughing, making it a fun and humorous film to watch. Numerous movies, books or TV shows have plenty of character that shows development throughout the course of their lifetime, series or whatever the case may be. In this case I decided to choose Dale Doback and Brennan Huff from the movie, Step Brothers. These characters play an enormous role in this movie due to the fact they are the step brothers the title was referring to. Brennan and Dale were both in their forties, they were both unemployed, still living at home, and self- centered, spoiled men. Neither of them had the slightest intentions of moving out of their parents’ houses. Brennan’s mother meets Dale’s father at a conference, there they hit things off. These two end up getting married and moving in with each other. Which was how
Braff himself has a warm, easy-to-watch screen presence. He can say nothing during the lull in a conversation, while the camera remains focused on his face, and it feels right. Portman and Sarsgaard are also genuine, each wonderfully relaxed in their roles. Production design is superb: details in every scene are arranged well, and the photography, by Lawrence Sher, is - like the story and the acting – unpretentious, never distracting, tricky or cute. This film never seems to manipulate us; instead it engages us, arouses our curiosity and amusement, bids us gently to care about Andrew and Sam and even Mark, leaving us entertained in the best sense. This movie is as confident, as secure in itself, as comforting, as a well worn pair of house slippers or your favorite reading chair. A splendid film. Grade: A- (09/04)
The play, Blood Brothers by Willy Russell, is a twisted tale of two brothers born on the same day and from the same womb, yet they live in two entirely different worlds.
When they are all together, it is movie magic! The dialogue and emotions that are so perfectly portrayed by all, will only leave you wanting more. Some of the gossip sessions are very dramatic and will bring you to tears, but some are so funny you’ll want to pee your pants. As Truvy states in the movie, “laughter through tears is my favorite emotion” and this movie delivers
The Great Depression of the 1930’s caused widespread poverty, but the popular culture of the time did not reflect this. People wanted to escape from this harsh time so movies, dancing and sports became very popular. Radios broadcasted boxing matches and boxers became stars. The heavyweight champion James J. Braddock aka “Cinderella Man,” gained popularity. James Braddock gained fame by winning many fights and proving everyone wrong when they said he was too old and couldn’t win.
Nevertheless, like I said, I found “Duck Soup” more amusing than funny. I hardly laughed, though I smiled fairly regularly, because I just didn’t find many of the jokes that hilarious. The brothers certainly showcase their talents, and the movie deserves credit for its verbal wit and nonstop humor. Even if the physical humor didn’t work for me, “Duck Soup” was hardly a waste of time, even though I didn’t think it was the comedy masterpiece that so many moviegoers consider
I think another big part of the movie is irony. Irony adds to the humor chart at about 10% and really makes a person think about what they are laughing about while the sit on their couch. Nacho does a lot of stuff that is ironic and that is what I call the cream of the crop or the best part of a movie or book. You also can’t see irony or you can but you can’t see the reason why it will be ironic. Unlike a joke which is just sudden and unexpected, but that’s not bad at all In peoples opinion they think that irony joins two parts of a movie or book together.
With the help of superb editing, sound, mise en scene, and cinematography, this film cannot be topped. The fist scene of the movie creates an atmosphere that helps the viewer know that he/she will enjoy this wonderful classic. Throughout the movie there are surprises and fun that makes this a movie that people will want to watch again and again. Gene Kelly said it best when he said, "Dignity, always dignity. " That is what this movie has from beginning to end, dignity.
I personally thought this was a great film, although initially I thought it might be boring. Once I got past the older production quality and immersed myself into the story, I enjoyed it. I can see why this film is a cinematic classic, especially with the memorable dialogue. My favorite lines came from Carr, the floor walker. He seemed to know his job like the back of his hand. “Any man loses his spoon; he spends the night in the box”.
Both Plautus and Terence are highly renowned playwrights, whose work has been passed on as an example of comedy in Roman culture. Plautus and Terence both pulled from the Greeks as inspiration, and although both authors’ work is humorous, they take different form. Plautus’ work is extreme, light-hearted and comical, while Terence’s work is more witty and realistic. This can be seen in Plautus’ play Double Bind and Terence’s work The Brothers. In both plays the authors have the same theme of moderation and use extremes to convey this message. Also both plays illustrate general confusion to create humor within the play. However, Plautus does not develop characters within his play, sticking with stock characters throughout the play. Instead Terence
O Brother, Where Art Thou? Dir. Joel Coen and Ethan Coen. Perf. George Clooney, Tim Blake Nelson and John Turturro. Studio Canal, Working Title Films, 2000. DVD.
During the film we explore feelings of jealousy, confusion, rivalry, sadness and loneliness. Throughout the film we can see inner conflicts, hidden feelings, and vulnerable characters by the use of the voice-overs. In the opening of the film we watch a joyous thanksgiving party; although we hear the distressed voice of one of the characters; privately conveying his desires, emotions, and deepest fears.
The real fun is the fantasy, absurdity, insatiable desire of characters. At the end of the film, the scene which I mentioned above is full of hints and irony. It enables us to see how transient this fiery love and desire as well as the happiness which went through all the schemes and sacrifice are. I saw the enthusiasm of Fefe, although he did kill his wife, I still cannot help but be infected by his insistent pursuit of love and earnest desire. Moreover, the exaggerated performance and some amusing expressions of the characters really makes this a movie that I will not regret to see.
There are many elements of humor that many of us didn’t know about. Different elements of humor can be amusing, facetious, ironic, light-hearted, etc. These elements can be in movies, stories, and even just in general when talking. A story with some elements of humor is “from Brothers”.
I like the film very much. I think its one of the best films I’ve seen ever. The comedy in the film is just my humour, and the action was okay.
