I’ve been lucky enough to catch the dazzlingly talented Gemma Salter in ‘Steel Magnolias’, the third show I’ve seen her in this year! The capability to laugh away the tears is justly rejoiced in Steel Magnolias. QUOTE Six robust Southern women from Natchitoches, Louisiana come together in this touching story of love and loss. Steel Magnolias explores the significance of friends and family through joy and tragedy. The well-timed, witty humour balances out and increases the impact of the pathos. Harling did an excellent job of creating real women, showing their strengths as well as tenderness, who lean on one another to get through their difficulties. Directed by the fabulous Liz Marsh, these women get more than a just a beauty treatment at Truvy’s salon. They gather together to converse about their personal lives, highlighting the problematic relationship between Shelby (Gemma Salter) and her mother, M’Lynn (Claire Storey). Truvy (Sarah Mahony) is tough yet sensitive, blunt and trustworthy. She hires the coy but amusing Annelle (Lucy Wells) to help her run the salon. Annelle begins to shampoo Ouiser (Gillian Cally), Truvy’s grouchy neighbour, whilst Truvy is tailoring Clairee’s (Tina Grey), a wealthy widow. …show more content…

The audience could quite clearly see these women had a bond as strong as steel. The title fits the characters exquisitely, the ladies we see on stage may appear as fragile as magnolias externally, but internally, they are made of steel that allowed them to endure through happiness and
