Whether it is through internet usage, newspaper articles, or everyday communication, society has been exposed to reality television shows. With television stations clamoring for higher ratings, promotional techniques stretch wide and far. Advertisements plaster public buildings, radio stations fill airwaves with popular cast interviews, and even local news channels make it a point to mention particularly sensational occurrences. The seemingly endless variety of topics in which reality shows are based provides appeal to a previously unprecedented audience. This multitude of reality television shows, including talent competitions, survival game shows, and shows on the daily life of others, ultimately affects the way people think, act, and generally live their own lives.
Talent competitions tend to bring out the higher spirits in people and often motivate them to try to be their best. The impact of talent competitions on viewers is typically seen year round, but significantly amplifies around the beginning and end of the season. Programs like American Idol, The X Factor, and The Voice are prime examples of popular talent competitions. In an interview discussing the importance of reality television shows, Courtney Clement said that she really enjoys watching shows where people are encouraged to express their talent. The auditions are her favorite, due to the often hilarious antics of hopeful contestants. Finale night always has her on the edge of her seat. She remembers staying up late one nerve wracking night just to find out who would become the next American Idol. Courtney confessed to feeling inspired by those who try out and hopes to build up her own courage to audition for American Idol or another televised singing competitio...

... them live in different degrees of intensity. Whether someone is influenced to act out of character due to a rising trend, is inspired to chase after something they previously thought unattainable, or even decides to alter the way in which they observe and present themselves to the world around them, there is an effect. It is glaringly obvious that reality shows have taken over most major television networks. Every new year brings about a new reality program, new talents discovered, new names to learn, new celebrities to follow, new trends are set, and even more new plans for new reality shows are made. What with the flood of reality television thundering down upon us, it is frighteningly easy for susceptible viewers to drown in actual reality.

So the networks have discovered ways to save money with reality’ shows one being they haven’t had to pay actors. All the main characters of this shows are contests and only one will be ~paid” at the end. In addition to not paying actors, they have also been able to cut back greatly on the number of writers used to write scripts. The reality shows have been in a way been “pre-tested” in other nations. Television viewers have more viewing choices than ever before in deciding how to spend their time with television. In recent years, reality television has become a popular genre for viewing audiences. According to Nabi (304), reality television programs, "film real people as they live out events (contrived or otherwise) in their lives.” One popular subgenre of reality television is romance-based competition shows. These shows typically follow a contestant on their search for love and as they choose between a group of attractive suitors. Over the course of an entire season, the lead contestant eliminates the group of suitors until only one-suitor remains and the couple becomes engaged.
How Reality TV affects the audience and the characters who were participating into it? Does it really give knowledge to people who were watching and supporting? Or is it just the sake of money and exposing their appearance on television? When it comes to watching television, people at home can choose which types of program they want to want for many reasons. Some people look to television for inspiration; others want to be kept informed about their surroundings and the world. In the article entitled, “Reality TV and Culture” by Jack Perry, he argues, there are some good points to how reality television are formed and offered. Perry explains that, not all of the shows are designed to encourage and promote dangerous and unrealistic. However,
Reality based television has a broad landscape ranging from competitive game-like shows to programs following the daily lives of a group of people. Every major network now has some form of reality programming because the genre’s shows are high in viewership and require low costs for production. The genre is appealing to viewers because it provides them with a first-hand look into the lives of everyday people, which allows them to observe social behavior that helps them determine what is appropriate or not (Tyree, 2011, p. 397). Since the majority of modern reality stars start out as unknowns, frequent viewers of reality programming believed that fame is obtainable if they appear on a popular show (Mendible, 2004). According to Mendible’s evaluation of the genre in the article Humiliation, Subjectivity, and Reality TV, people enjoy reality programs beca...
The emergence and soon popularity of reality TV in some degree demonstrates the huge market of selling “real experience” through exposing “realities” of privacy, relationship between players, etc. (Deery 2004 in TV program area.). However, reality TV may not be intrinsically “real” though almost all involved players are unprofessional actors and programs are usually highly inscribed. Players are actually selected carefully (e.g. audition or interviews) and constrained by various signed agreements and all filmed scene sections are delicately edited with special purposes, making reality TV kind of erasing reality and fiction together (Bingchun & George (2003)).
The first effect of reality shows is the image it gives viewers. Reality shows give misconceptions of everyday life; the Real World and Jersey Shore show young adults relaxing, having a good time, and partying every day. The...

The genre’s shows provide audiences with a first-hand look into the lives of everyday people, which creates resonance among viewers because they feel like they can relate to the characters on screen (Hasinoff, 2008). In today 's society, television is one of the greatest entertainment, and currently reality televisions have become the most commonly watched television programs. Reality tv, beside being entertaining , it has effected society in a negative
Since the very first reality show launching in 1990, the reality genre has rapidly developed to become the most popular experience of television nowadays. A plethora of research has been undertaking in recent years to identify the origin of reality shows’ appeal which concentrated mainly on the psychological side such as the theory of human motivations called ‘16 basic desires’ which linking the most fundamental purposes of human life to aspirations with their attention to media conducted by Reiss and Wiltz (2004) or the element of mastery sense named ‘schadenfreude’ introduced by Hall (2006).
Many reality TV shows are driving young kids to be driven by money and fame. Our reality television makes us seem ignorant to other countries. Young viewers of these reality TV shows do not realize that most of the shows are often scripted and are not “real”. Although the programming of reality TV can be highly entertaining, it is important to be aware of the messages, and values that these shows often portray. Since reality TV has such a strong foothold in American pop culture, it is likely not going anywhere or changing its content any time soon.
Reality Television has changed television in a way that no one could have imagined. Being the one of the most talked about genre in history, it is seen by millions of viewers. It has more ratings than any other kind of show (Breyer 16). From its start, there have been many Reality Television shows. Shows like The Real World, Survivor, Big Brother, and Jersey Shore. All of these give off a negative portrayal of reality. While Americans watch these shows, it seems that the show is real life, but in reality, no pun intended, before the show is even filmed, it’s written, edited, and produced (Breyer 21). Writers humiliate and degrade people just for the plot of the show, making their private lives public (Breyer 16).
I also found that the age of the viewer is not always a direct tie to their answer either. A nineteen year old college student had the exact same favorite reality TV show as a fifty two year old consultant. “The Voice” seems to be a very popular show recently among those of all ages. For some, like the two in the study, they love music and a good laugh, and that’s why this happens to be their favorite. The majority of the people in my study seemed to find the shows they were watching comical. They also either had a passion for the people in the show or it gave them a motivation to participate in something bigger than themselves. A very popular answer among my question about a favorite reality television show was “Teen Mom.” The Four participants that said “Teen Mom” was their favorite were all girls from the age of eight teen to twenty two. When asked why is was their favorite, the most popular answer was because of the entertainment they got out of it. The drama is so intense and it’s interesting to see how different their lives are now because of it. Although the girls that watched “Teen Mom” said they did it because of entertainment, there was a very general answer from every person when asked why they like to watch reality television. The most popular answer was that they find it strictly
The creation of television broadcasting changed the way the world interacted, making it one of the most successful and important innovation. The Entertainment industry brought Reality TV to America, changing and evolving along with the changes in society. The concept of Reality TV is to show the struggles of real people or actors without scripts, surprising, and terrifying many of its viewers. The television content has changed over the years reflecting the changes in society; the Reality Shows are becoming more obscene, controversial, and competitive.
A second reason for people’s love of reality television, is the fact that reality TV can stir the viewer’s emotions. “While some cheer for their favorite celebrity on Dancing with the Stars….” (Lehmann). “ Or cry with joy watching Say Yes to the Dress…” ( Lehmann). These are just two of many example quotes that show that people sometimes get very emotional by simply watching other people live out their lives so publicly. Many people id...
