Statue of Individuality
Using reason and logic to think was a new idea. This new idea was a part of the revolutionary enlightenment of a daily new Renaissance. To show this new thinking the church wanted a beautiful statue of David for the cathedral. Why? Because, “David’s strength, courage and youthful confidence where the image that Florence wanted to project” (Senatore). In the 1500’s Florence had regained its status as a republic. David symbolized Florence’s independence from outside forces, both foreigners and aristocracy (Senatore). Donatello was the person assigned to make the statue in 1408. But he couldn’t handle the marbles size and texture, and failed to get far. So the marble was left out through all the different weathers, rotting. Until an amazing artist by the name of Michelangelo came along. The church offered him the job and the marble on October 1501. Michelangelo began on this three year project. The church never offered to help or even asked if he needed assistance. He worked for a full three years on this project in rain or snow, hot or cold and was pleased when it was finally finished.
Michelangelo showed art in a realistic viewpoint. Most statues ad paintings before the Renaissance were of biblical characters and scenes or Greek Gods and Goddesses interacting with humans. Those old ideas were what the artistic, cultural revolutionaries and enlightened thinkers tried to stay away from "The statue David showed human strength and beauty without being godly" (Florence). He helped shape the revolution. He showed the full human body because of his extensive knowledge in anatomy and captured ever subtitle detail of David down to the veins in his hands/arms. Nearly four million people visited the Statue of Liberty in 2014. A little over 6 feet of marble, Donatello’s first version of David was one of his earliest known commisions that mark the beginning of his artistic career. He was commissioned by the Operai of the cathedral of Florence to create a David statue to decorate one of the buttresses. The statue ended up looking too small when placed high up, so it was taken down and later requested to be displayed in Palazzo Vecchio, the town hall. Many historians dismiss his first version of David, calling this piece unoriginal and nothing to praise.
During the time of the renaissance, Italy became the cultural center of Europe and of the renaissance (“Italian Renaissance”). Art had a major impact on the people of Italy during the Renaissance. Many pieces of art were seen as a metaphor for the people of Italy. Italy had independent city-states with their own governments (“Italian Renaissance”). Michelangelo’s sculpture “David” was an example of a sculpture seen as a metaphor. It represented the biblical hero from the story of David and Goliath was seen as a metaphor for the people of Italy against the government it reminded them that someone as small as David once defeated a giant(“Michelangelo Buonarroti”). Even though the arts were changing in Italy, the government was not doing so well. Bernini’s “David” is 5 foot, 7 inches tall and was made in the year 1623. It is from the Baroque period, a time of discovery, exploration and increased trade. Bernini’s “David” is a three-dimensional sculpture that gives the viewer the ability to relate the image with one’s body and not only in one’s mind. Bernini wanted to show the intensity and dramatic tension in the hero David as he prepares to cast the stone from the sling. David, a young Israelite teenager, is a character from a Biblical story who defeats and kills Goliath, a giant Philistine warrior, with a stone. The story shows how a young man overcomes oppositions and is a popular subject among various artists. David was famously depicted by Michelangelo and Bernini, who both used marble to create their statues. Both Michelangelo’s David and Bernini’s David statues are positioned in contrapposto, the asymmetrical positioning of the human form where all the weight of the form is positioned on one foot resulting in a curving of the torso and no alignment in the shoulders. Each figure also shows emotion and tension in their faces and body. Although they both chose David as the subject matter, the way they portray David differs stylistically, when they were made and the purpose of the works.
The pieces of art I will be comparing and contrasting are the three statues of David, by Donatello (Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi), Michelangelo (Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni), and Bernini (Gian Lorenzo Bernini). The statues are modeled after the biblical David, who was destined to become the second king of Israel. Also most famously known as the slayer of the Philistine giant Goliath with a stone and a sling. The sculptures are all based on the same biblical hero, but differ from one another. Each David is unique in its own certain way.
His artwork took sculptures and paintings to another level. While he was sculptor and a painter, he also was a poet. One of my personal favorite quotes by him is, “the greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it”. Michelangelo is saying that we settle; we do not push ourselves. We find contentment in not making a change or challenging the world, but we are okay with hiding behind the norm. Donatello was the son of Niccolo di Betto Bardi, a Florentine wool carder. It is not known how he started his career but probably learned stone carving from one of the sculptors working for the cathedral of Florence about 1400. Sometime between 1404 and 1407 he became a member of the workshop of Lorenzo Ghiberti who was a sculptor in bronze. Donatello’s earliest work was a marble statue of David. The “David” was originally made for the cathedral but was moved in 1416 to the Palazzo Vecchio which is a city hall where it long stood as a civic patriotic symbol. From the sixteenth century on it was eclipsed by the gigantic “David” of Michelangelo which served the same purpose. Other of Donatello’s early works which were still partly gothic are the impressive seated marble figure of St. John the Evangelist for the cathedral and a wooden crucifix in the church of Sta. Croce.
Michelangelo’s inspiration for art was sculpting models because that is all he wanted to do was sculpting and nothing else. He had no interest in the family business, so his father let him be an apprentice at age 13 with the Florentine painter’s workshop and that is when Michelangelo was exposed to the technique of fresco. He had spent a year at the workshop and that is when something extraordinary happened to him. His motive was to become the best sculptor in the whole world because that is all he wanted to since he was 13 years old. All the combined influences laid him the groundwork’s for what style he wanted to do. He was also inspired by his own masters to become an artist with his own style of art.

Michelangelo Buonarroti is one of the greatest artists of the Renaissance times, as well as one of the greatest of all time. He did was a painter, a sculptor as well as an architect, excelling in all areas from a young age. Michelangelo’s art was a symbol of the Florence people’s cultural and political power and superiority. Michelangelo thought of himself as a divine being, meaning he thought he was perfection and no one could ever compare. To this day through, in terms of his art, this may hold some truth depending mostly on opinion. He created some of the most magnificent, and most sought after pieces of all time. Some of them are still around today for us to witness including Michelangelo’s Pieta, and one of his most famous Michelangelo’s David.
Michelangelo’s David does not react with the surroundings but it stands alone with the little movements disguised behind it. The sculpture brings out David as a soldier preparing for war and not a person engaged in a battle (Miller, Vandome, & McBrewster, 2010). The hands are larger than normal and the arms are longer than his body. This is meant to illustrate the renaissance period. In contrast, the Bernini’s David has aspects of motion, showing that he was already engaged in the battle with Goliath. The idea of movement is enhanced by the loosely flowing robes. In addition, the sculpture demonstrates that unlike Michelangelo’s David that has longer hands, Bernini’s David has contracted muscles. The Michelangelo’s sculpture was created during Renascence period while the Bernini’s sculpture was done during the Baroque period.
I chose to write about the Statue of Liberty. The Statue of Liberty serves as a symbolic fixture of the principles America was founded on. She represents freedom, liberty, and opportunity. The location of the Statue of Liberty is an amazing feat in itself, it is right in the middle of a very wide and a very deep Hudson river, and at the time it was brought there, with the limited technology, was amazing. Adding to the location, The State of Liberty as everyone knows is right next to the old customs ports where thousands of hungry, and poor immigrants fresh off the boat would pass through looking for a better life. The fact that Liberty is a woman is an ingenious idea because a woman tends to be more sympathetic and willing to help, if Liberty was a man the statue would seem more cold, stiff, and even militant. Throughout history statues have been built to represent a great moment but the Statue of Liberty was build to symbolize a great idea and country. At that time in history people were flocking to America because they were either being persecuted in their home countries or they were just disappointed at the status of their lives and wanted to come to “the land of opportunity” to start a new life.
Michelangelo was so outstanding in his craft that he was called Divine. However, his father believed his son would not amount to anything more than a stone-cutter. This remark was constantly on Michelangelo’s mind and as a result he often signed his work “Michelangelo the stone cutter.” His most famous work is the painting of the Sistine Chapel in St. Peter’s Church in Rome. The Ceiling depicts nine scenes from the book of Genesis and took 4 years to paint under the most difficult of conditions. He was fascinated with the problems of representing the human body and dedicated himself completely to mastering it which lends itself to his most famous sculptor of the statue of David.
