Getting the Fulbright grant in 2008 was the greatest ambition I ever achieved in my life. The scholarship has given me a considerable opportunity to be schooled in digital architecture and to obtain sufficient knowledge in this major. "Digital Architecture" is one of the rare specialization's in Libya, and I am proud to say that I am the first female Libyan architect who has a master's degree in such major. This honor made me think genuinely about granting it to my country by carrying what I had learned to the University of Tripoli (UT), and to be the foremost professor in this major. However, persuading my Ph.D. study at the University of California Berkeley shall be a sequel to my initial steps in this area and will enhance my knowledge and serve both my country and my school that is still lacking the spirit of accepting new trends in architecture.
In the terms of my undergraduate study, one course in the Architecture Department generated my curiosity towards the connection between the Architecture and Technology; Structure Systems. By choosing Walt Disney Concert Hall as a case study for an assignment in this course, I realized how CAD tools are able to increase architect’s expressive and geometric power, and how computer models can be used throughout the whole design process to translate the architect’s concept. “CATIA provides a way for me to get closer to the craft," said Frank Gehry referring to the software that was implemented in his practice. He explained "In the past, there were many layers between my rough sketch and the final building, and the feeling of the design could get lost before it reached the craftsman. It feels like I've been speaking a foreign language, and now, all of a sudden, the craftsman understands me...

Briefly, my previous successful study in the United States had increased my practicable knowledge, and certainly it will be increased more if I persuaded my Ph.D. study at University of California Berkeley. American universities are known with their perfect courses, and their inventiveness and uniqueness. As a result, my dream of being a well-known Libyan female architect and a remarkable professor who has a significant role in the development of her country will only be achieved and supported by being a part of your program. I am confident that studying Ph.D. in digital design in your school will open many doors for me later in life and dream that one day I will be the hand behind a design which people will stop and admire. Doctorate will definitely allow me to make concrete and substantial contribution to the architecture of Libya.
Gehry draws his inspiration from famous paintings such as the Madonna and Child which he qualifies as a “strategy for architecture” (Friedman M. , 2003, p. 42) and which he used as an inspiration for a project in Mexico . Through his interpretation of the paintings and artwork, Gehry looked for a new kind of architecture. His search for a new type of architecture culminated in 1978 with his own house in Santa Monica. What was once a traditional Californian house would be redesigned to become one of the most important and revolutionary designs of the 20th century, giving Gehry international prestige and fame. Frank Gehry’s “Own House” uses a mixture of corrugated metal, plywood, chain link and asphalt to construct a new envelope for an existing typical Californian house. This house has been inspired by Joseph Cornell, Ed Moses and Bob Rauschenberg. Gehry comments on his house by saying that there was something “magical” (Friedman M. , 2003, p. 54) about it. He admits having “followed the end of his [my] nose” (Friedman M. , 2003, p. 54) when it came to constructing the “new” house, which led Arthur Drexler, former Director...
We often focus on the many different materials and products needed to make that special architectural structure. We tend to undermine and dilute the cost and time it takes to be able to follow through and complete such a task. However, the most important thing when
The election night of 2000 was a pivotal moment in my life. I stayed up all night on November 7th, 2000, not because I was enthralled with watching Florida flip-flop between Gore and Bush, but because I had an IV in my arm which made it impossible to be comfortable. Earlier that evening, I was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes, a disease affecting 1 of 800 people in America. This was an especially crucial time in my life, considering I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis—an autoimmune disease that attacks the GI track in 1 of 1400 Americans—the June before, and I had my Bar-Mitzvah in September. According to the Jewish religion, I had become an adult, and as such, I had decided to greet my new medical challenges with gusto, attempting to see the silver lining from the very beginning. I cannot say that I am glad I was nature’s statistical anomaly, but I am thankful for the opportunity to see from a young age how to turn a tough situation into a positive. After almost nine years, I come back to this pivotal night in my life because it marked a change that still plays a part in my life now, and will continue to shape me in the future.
Last year, MoMA held a special exhibition, Applied design, to show how design has branched out in new directions and attracting worldwide attention. In an exhibition’s description, they argued that “Like physics, design will be loosely divided into the theoretical and the applied. Theoretical de...

True architects are needed to create architectural beauty and they do so by using “elements which are capable of affecting our senses, and of rewarding the desire of our eyes...the sight of them affects us immediately” (16). Le Corbusier’s says that we must standardize architecture with respect to function so that we can mass produce it until we perfect its aesthetic through competition and innovation. Le Corbusier believed that Architecture schools weren’t teaching students correctly and that engineers would be the ones who save architecture. Architecture is a thing of plastic emotion. “It should use elements capable of striking our senses, of satisfying our visual desires…arranging them in a way that the sight of them clearly affects

Architecture has been known as the product of aesthetics, structure, and function that serves to address social needs, resolve environmental and humanitarian problems through built form. Architecture not only shelters, but also has the ability to consolidate boundaries within our society. It realizes the role by physically defining space and by imposing its symbolic, representative meaning onto our living environment. As Ludwig Wittgenstein once said, “Architecture immortalizes and glorifies something”. Indeed, architecture must be documentary and didac...
Learning is a continuous process and the day that you stop learning is the day that you start decreasing your rewards and lower levels of satisfaction. My ardent desire to acquire knowledge has motivated me to pursue higher studies at graduate level, and to take up a career in research in industry. I have taken this decision after carefully considering my academic background, profound interest in research and strong aptitude for problem solving.
In conclusion, although the development of modern architecture and the intervention of computer technology to advocate this development, the contemporary architectural outcomes have became more complex and complicated with potential formulation problems. As a result, the new architecture theories came to put boundary lines between being in the range of these problems and producing elegant modern built environment. The seduction of computer-produced form also enhances architects to involve in seeking for new theories to develop the discipline and work to combine formulization with materialization. Finally, some of these theories are accepted and some other still a controversial aspect in architecture.

There are 25 major specialties in engineering that are recognized by professional societies. In any one of those 25 specialties, the goal of the engineer is the same. The goal is to be able to come up with a cost effective design that aids people in the tasks they face each day. Whether it be the coffee machine in the morning or the roads and highways we travel, or even the cars we travel in, it was all an idea that started with an engineer. Someone engineered each idea to make it the best solution to a problem. Even though engineer’s goals are similar, there are many different things that engineers do within their selected field of engineering. This paper will focus on the architectural field of engineering.

Constantly judged and evolving, the practice of architecture is forever plagued by the future. The future of people, of culture, technology and its resulting implications on the built environment that more often than not, outlives their creators. Much of the conversation surrounding this future architecture currently hinges itself on the creation of new experiences, forms and spatial relationships brought about by technological innovation.
I believe that this is the correct program for me and I hope that this program will help me foster and develop my creative talents further and become the person I want to be, an architect that leaves an impact on the world. I realize now the power that architecture has and the role it plays in shaping lives as I have seen it shape mine through studying it, and so now I would like to continue my education, so that I can take the necessary steps forward to fulfilling what I want to do in my architectural
