In high school, I was part of SkillsUSA, a national organization that heavily focused on Career and Technical Education for students in high school and in college. It was my junior year in high school and I had become fascinated with this organization. There are many types of competitions such as cosmetology or architecture and engineering where students can showcase their talents along with what they have learned in school. My range of skills allowed me to compete in different types of computer and leadership competitions. This led me to many different experiences that have greatly influenced my personality and have allowed me to learn that there are many important aspects to have a good character. Having won some competitions and lost others has given me experiences that allowed me to improve myself and to truly understand how some parts of our personality are important.

Hi Amber, first of all I just want to say congratulations on being awarded Officer of the Month, Officer of the Year and earning a position with the Federal Bureau of Investigation task force. Sounds like your drive to remain proactive eventually paid off. Like you, I tend to be most proactive professionally and more reactive in my personal endeavors. I have been with my current employer for almost seven years and even though I am extremely proactive, unfortunately the opportunity for advancement is very limited. Every since I was a child I have had a passion for doing other people’s hair. When I was little I would use my baby dolls as clients and work on their hair until it was perfect and neat. I have chosen to be in the cosmetology field because I like to help other people with their needs and wants as well as mine. I am aware that while working in this industry I will work with many different ethnic groups and many different hair types. I feel I can do anything as long as I have the determination to do so. Many people go to cosmetology school to work for someone else, but I would like to open up a mini-salon out of my own home someday.
Deciding to go to college was not easy. I was planning to opt for Cosmetology school. I had a great passion for hair and makeup. I have colored my own hair, gave many of my friend's highlights and I gave my mom bangs. My plan was to work in my favorite hair salon De La Mer for five years, save up enough money and then open up my own beauty salon. My parents were not on board with my plan. As I was getting my makeup done for graduation, my makeup artist began to tell me how she wishes she had gone to college, she said she had taken the easy route out of high school and that she was planning on going to school. Staying focused: This is probably one of the hardest. I have a lot of things going on in my life. Two jobs, college, taking care of a family, which is all important but I always can’t get overwhelmed and forget what I’m trying to accomplish.
Ever since I was a child, I dreamed of becoming a fashion designer. As far back as I can remember, whenever I had a paper and pencil, I would draw amateur fashion sketches. It seemed evident that fashion design was the career I would pursue. For birthday presents I would ask for sewing and art supplies so I could hone my skills to perfection. It seemed simple, all I needed to do was work on sewing and sketching until I would become proficiently skilled. I would then be able to procure a spot in fashion school and ultimately acquire a degree in apparel design. I anticipated interning during my college year with the aim of gaining a foothold in the fashion community. Ultimately, I dreamed of creating my own apparel line.
After taking the StrenghtsQuest and the Holland Interest Inventory I have realized a lot of points that I’ve never realized before. I have realized there are certain things that I did know about but I just never justified the interest in knowing about it. After much consideration I’m honestly not sure if my career that I’m looking into is really what is going to fit my profile. I’m going to tell you my top three scores from the Holland Interest Inventory and the top five StrengthsQuest.
Within the mostly Hispanic neighborhood Washington Heights there is a multitude of beauty salons and beauty supplies stores. As I am fairly familiar to the area I chose to observe the social interactions of Dominican women getting their hair done instead of my initial reaction to the neighborhood. Starting at Nine am on the rainy Thursday, I observed five women each choosing their respective hairdresser and proceeding to do their hair. The women whom attend the salon are well dressed;with heels, jewelry, and stellar outfits(as if going to brunch instead of sitting under a hood dryer for 2 hours). Once entering the salon they all immediately begin to speaking Spanish, regardless of fluency. Each
My learning style varies from course to course. I’m a fast leaner in a class where there’s lots of hands on work, sort of slow in math, and not a fast learner in classes like History. I tend to lose interest in History class. Especially when there’s a lot of notes, and I get lost in the lecture part of it. I loved reading books for my 091 English class that actually held my attention; Otherwise, I probably would not have learned anything. I am not a fast learner, but I can focus long enough to get the work done. If people are talking and being loud, I can’t focus. As long as I have a clean and quiet space I can focus.
