Standing Up for Others Standing up for others is a very important thing in life. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a very advanced speaker. He is known for his “I Have A Dream” speech, but he’s also known for the little things he says. Some of the quotes he says are about standing up for other. It is important to stand up for others so that it shows somebody is a true friend, so that people don’t cause the good people sadness and tragedy, and so that people don’t act like the bad person or encourage the bad people. Martin Luther King Jr. “I Have a Dream” speech was delivered as motivation to fight for their rights and help paint the picture of what America could look like in the future. He does this by in the beginning saying that even though the Emancipation Proclamation was signed African Americans are not treated as normal citizens. By saying this Martin Luther King Jr. was saying we should not just be content with being free from slavery. That now it is time to fight for our rights and to end discrimination because of the color on one’s skin.

If he had not made clear that he was a trustworthy, knowledgeable, and honest man, he would not have made his point clear. King’s statement “Oppressed people cannot remain oppressed forever,” (Martin Luther King 24) is a strong reminder of history. If people do not realize their emotions in a nonviolent way, they will seek violence until they are heard. That statement is one of the strongest concerns to show why direct action was important, as well as, convincing the reader to consider their immoral practices. King goes above any beyond in sharing his beliefs because if he had not, the audience would not have been persuaded. Furthermore, the information and evidence he demonstrated was necessary at that

Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from Birmingham Jail brings up the idea of acting in a just or unjust manner. In this letter, he’s saying that it’s moral for one to break a law if they feel it is an unjust one. He stated that any law that’s degrading a person should be considered unjust. Even though the technical reason for his arrest was just, since he was parading without a permit, it was an unjust action because it was used to maintain segregation in Birmingham. Since the reasoning for his actual arrest was unjust, he said that it’s okay to take action against it. What matters, however, is that it is done in a loving and direct way. People do not acknowledge the struggles that African Americans had to endure for them to be treated equally, the way a true American is supposed to be treated. One of the ways they were not treated equally was by not being able to participate in sports with whites. From the beginning of our nation, colored people were highly disrespected and treated as if they were some type of animals, which have no say in what happens to them. They were not given any opportunities and were treated harshly because their skin color was different. Whites were able to practically do anything they wanted, unlike blacks, who were racially discriminated or beaten for no apparent reason. African Americans were among the worst treated races in the US; however, this did not stop them from fighting for the rights that so many had died for. It seemed as if black people would never be treated respectfully, but just like in comic books, there is always a hero that will fight for his people. This hero soon came to the scene and he was fierce enough to change the lives of many people. Most importantly, he broke the color barrier and created a path that would allow others to follow. However, something that was inevitable was the threats and racial remarks they had to face.
Most people do not actively seek out adversity, yet few can escape encountering adversity in the form of hardships and afflictions. Two people who faced great adversity in their lives were Martin Luther King Jr. and my father Brent Vickery. These men both faced adversity in different degrees and at different times and places within the United States, but what makes them similar is that their strength of character allowed them to face adversity boldly.
In the bible it does say that we must love our neighbor. Even if they do wrong to us, we must not do wrong in return. It says that even if you only do good to the people that do good to you, you are no better than your enemy. This is the only disagreement I have with Dr. King’s letter. His expectations were too high for them and he felt let down every time they didn't comply with what he thought. This to me is only hurting him emotionally. It’s better to set your expectations lower so that if they did anything positively towards his movement then that's a plus, but if they don't it’s not really a loss. This protects yourself emotionally and mentally. I guess that's why Dr. King is known for being persistent and actually brought results to segregation. He had these high expectations because he believed the things he was fighting for would one day happen. Our perspectives on recognition are different. It was there King meet Mordecai Wyatt Johnson (1891 – 1976) an American educator and pastor. He served as the first black president of Howard University, from 1926 until 1960. Johnson has been considered one of the leading African-American preachers of the early 20th-century. Johnson would traveled 25,000 miles a year throughout the country speaking principally on topics such as racism, segregation, and discrimination and his word become a source of great influence for the young Martin L. King. Year later both men spoke alongside each other on the subject of social justice. King was an gifted reader and was introduce to the works of great social reformers that include the work of Mohandas K. Gandhi. King identified with the philosophy of nonviolence resistance, which Gandhi had used effectively to make positive change in India. Civil disobedience is the refusal to obey certain laws, but in a peaceful form of political protests. Martin Luther King Jr. is the best example of a form of civil disobedience for the Civil rights Movement and many more through the late 1950s to the late 1960s. ‘’Martin Luther King Jr. used the power of words and acts of nonviolent resistance, such as protest, grassroots organizing, and civil disobedience.’’
When MLK was taken in to custody, he was charged with “parading without a permit”(King), which really means he was doing wrong because it was a parade against segregation. He was holding a peaceful protest on behalf of the people who did not have a voice for themselves, and he was going to stop at nothing to be heard. MLK, while in jail, was receiving criticizing letters from all over about his protest, he never responded to them until he came across one. Eight Alabama clergymen entitled, “A Call For Unity”, which explained that he should be fighting in courts only and not on the street, wrote the letter. When King writes back that taking direct action is the only way to achieve the true civil rights even if it goes against what is morally right.

The date was August 28, 1963, when the world would make a change of history for the better. It all started off when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. presented his famous “I Have a Dream” speech at the Lincoln memorial. The crowd was filled with different varieties of people that were all gathered up to acknowledge Dr. Kings philosophy and purpose. This world would have been different if not for Dr. King’s speech presenting his ideas and main goals, which were gained through his philosophy of non-violence and hard work. Dr. King’s main purpose was to have peace between the Whites and Blacks, which he accomplished through his speech by showing his integrity. In the “I Have a Dream” speech Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. exercised strong stylistic techniques like hyperbole, irony, metaphor, and repetition to establish his integrity.
You’d block your ears from a loud, piercing sound, and you’d put bandages on your scars to cover them from impurities. You’d expect that the opposite of something can beat or cure it, just like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” However, from time to time, from the smallest bickerings to historical events and terrorist acts, you’d see the pattern of hate and fear stacking on each other, with hopes that the hatred will end itself.
