The most common method of teaching is teaching to pass a test also known as standardized testing. This method is used in most schools and educational institutions. “A standardized test is a test that is administered and scored in a consistent, or standard manner.” (“Standardized test.”) With standardized testing all students answer the same common questions which are in the form of true and false or multiple-choice. Curriculum material is tailored to teach students exactly what they need to know to pass exams. Although it is often argued that standardized tests which are graded by a computer removes all biasness, the test does not measure the true performance of a student. Even with open ended questions, a fix rubric for grading is followed so that evaluations are consistent. Standardized testing methods are an ineffective way of teaching.

Standardized testing limits students to think independently and creatively as they are taught to pass exams. “These test do not accurately measure the ability of an individual to think deeply or creatively.” (“What is wrong with standardized tests?”) This just shows that standardized testing encourages familiarity and not push students to think creatively and out of the box. Standardized testing is a method used in most schools and it is the gateway to higher education, but it does not measure any individual student’s intelligence. The test is only a small fraction of the evaluations that should determine where and how students should be placed. Standardized testing creates an atmosphere of competition and grade awareness which places pressure on teachers and educators. Standardized testing is harmful to student who need help the most.
