In 2002 the No Child Left Behind Act was passed in the U.S. requiring every state by law to administer standardized tests in the common core classes (GreatSchoolsStaff). Standardized tests are used to determine students’ performance levels in Reading, Math, and Science (Concordia University). Scores are compared amongst other school districts and students throughout the U.S. and each state determines the level of proficiency each student needs to meet (GreatSchoolsStaff). On standardized tests all test takers answer the same questions usually in multiple choice format and write their response to open ended questions (FairTest). Standardized tests that are not required by law, but are highly recommended for students that wish to attend college are the SAT’S. The SAT’S also test the performance level of student’s and are then used in college submissions. The government should eliminate standardized testing in all schools across the nation.
