There are many integral members that contribute to the success of a sports medicine team that each have different responsibilities but as a whole work fluently together. Our sports medicine team is comprised of five different personnel with all varying qualifications and education level. These five members of the sports medicine team are the athlete themselves, the strength and conditioning coach, the head coach, the teams physician and the atheletic trainer.
The athlete is essential to the sports medicine team because they are the one everyone is trying to prevent or bring back from injury. It is the coach’s responsibility to teach proper skills and techniques to the athletes. It is also the responsibility of the coach to be active in the emergency action plan, stay current with CPR certification and help with the duty of maintaining quality safety equipment.
The next member of our sports medicine team is the strength and conditioning coach. At the collegiate level the typical strength and conditioning coach has a master’s degree and a certification as a certified strength and conditioning specialist which is administered by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. As a member of the sports medicine team it is the job of the strength and conditioning coach to improve overall fitness and the athletes’ physical skill and performance. They also work closely with the athletic trainer to create different programs for injured and uninjured athletes. We must obtain several things in writing for each individual before they will be allowed to particioate in soccer. The three documents the participant will need to participate are: a pre-participation physical examination, a signed written assumption of risk document, and a signed written informed consent document. We also will check the playing field for harmful playing conditions before every practice or game and there will need to be proper supervision of all activities. The first document the participant will need is a pre-physical examination, this will be conducted by the team physician six weeks prior to the start of the soccer season. These documents are mandatory and will be kept on for the duration of the season. They will be kept locked in a file cabinet in the athletic training room for confidentiality reasons. The next document the athlete needs to provide is a written assumption of risk document that each participant will need to sign before they are allowed to participate. This can be accomplished in a team meeting prior to the season with the athletic trainer where the athletic trainer will go over possible risks of playing, and give time for the athletes to ask any questions at this time.
