Water needs to be purified in order to be drinkable and safe for humanity. Most athlete's drink high quality purified water which promotes their hydration. Specialists have decided that drinking a sports drink, such as Gatorade, is better for athletes than if they ate carbs or drink sugary drinks like soda. Gatorade is a sports drink that can be used to combat dehydration in both athletes and citizens of third world countries. Gatorade was first made popular by Michael Jordan who helped it become well know in 1997. Gatorade came about when the Florida Gator Football Coach, Dwayne Douglas, was concerned for his players that were overly exhausted and passing out during football season. He made his way to the university kidney specialist, Dr. Robert Cade, to find some answers. Coach Douglas’ players were sweating off up to 18 pounds without being thirsty for water. Dr. Cade then began to make a mixture with healthy ingredients such as water, carbohydrates and electrolytes. These ingredients all helped to replace the athlete's lost fluids. It was then called “ Gator Coaches Ade”. The Gators started winning games and soon every team was drinking this sports drinks. This was the beginning of the sports drink industry. Gatorade has won many awards like the Clio Sports Award. This stuff has been proven to be better for athlete's than water because of it's ingredients. Gatorade is a major market and has many athletes that endorse
Energy drinks affect your body in ways people don’t think about. My experiment was created to find out what happens to your heart rate after putting an energy drink into your body. Some of the things I found by doing some research is that you can go to the hospital just for drinking an energy drink alone. Energy drinks contain more caffeine than what the label says. Based on this research a hypothesis was created. The hypothesis was, if you drink an energy drink, then your heart rate will increase due to the amount of caffeine it contains. This hypothesis made the most sense because caffeine has been labeled by doctors to not be the safest substance.
Is it in you? Have you ever wondered if Gatorade really gives you a competitive edge over H2O (water) in an athletic event or while training? I’ve seen countless commercials and have always pondered the thought; can this sports drink really give you the edge you need? I mean, professional athletes from Michel Jordan to Tiger Woods have endorsed this drink and given it the reputation is has today. I myself was a believer that water was better than Gatorade until I wrote this paper. Now I believe that Gatorade has far more nutritional value than water, because it provides essential minerals, carbohydrates and electrolytes.

It is important for anyone doing physical activity to keep well hydrated, for performance to be at its best. Sports drinks are specially formulated to help people rehydrate during or after exercise. Drinks such as Gatorade and Powerade contain the main electrolytes and carbohydrates, which are used by the working muscles, to maintain optimal sports performance (Medindia.net, 2014). The acidity of sports drinks and the sugars, is raising health concerns, and creates unnecessary calories. (Nutritionwonderland.com, 2014) Sports drinks are proven to only be necessary when working intensely for over 90 minutes, so an athlete running a marathon may need a Powerade, but water is the best source of hydration for exercise of 90min or less. (Griffith-Greene, 2014)
It has long been established that both short and long-term exercise increase metabolic rate and heat production. This naturally predisposes participants to dehydration. Typical symptoms of dehydration include elevated temperature, fluid and electrolyte imbalance due to sweating, and loss of critical nutrients, such as glycogen (depleted via metabolic pathways). Many individuals participating in moderate to rigorous training schedules may engage in daily exercise, if not multiple exercise routines in one day (3,4,5,6). It then follows that the goal for these individuals should be avoidance of dehydration and maximization of rehydration through maintenance of electrolyte balance, replenishment of muscle glycogen, and plasma osmolality. Thus, examination of a fluid’s efficacy in these three areas is crucial. Through extensive research, it is evident that Gatorade will rehydrate faster and more effectively than water.
Companies utilize different marketing strategies to appeal to their target audience. The methods they use to market their products usually reflects the target audience’s preferences or needs. Gatorade was invented at the University of Florida in 1965 by a team of researchers. They discovered nutrients were not being replenished when the school’s football team competed and formulated a solution to the problem. Today Gatorade primarily targets athletic or physically active individuals, especially professional athletes. Over time, Gatorade has become one of the most popular and leading sports drink companies in the world. Many people recognize what Gatorade is and what they do to help individuals who need the extra replenishment so they can continue

Hydration with water and other water-based liquids is critical for survival and functioning of the body’s organs. Water is 60% of the total human body composition. Water is involved in the function of temperature regulation, elimination of waste and secretion, digestion, and is 80% of blood composition. Deborah Boardly, assistant professor of health promotion and human performance at the University of Ohio in Toledo says, "I truly believe that dehydration (insufficient body fluids) may be the number one nutrition problem for athletes—and, possibly, people in general." Boardly goes on to say, "Today we have all these concerns about everything we should and shouldn’t eat—and yet here is this absolutely fundamental substance and it is grossly overlooked."(http://www.tdo.com/features/health/stories/0803/)
...Gatorade. Go look at some other drinks such as PowerAde or some Vitamin Water. There pretty much all the same just with different flavors. Advertisers try and persuade you from the one place you thought was safe from them, your brain. There’s pretty much no hiding from ads but the next time you see one on TV don’t just passively watch them, and let those advertisers in your brain, analyze those commercials, so instead of just watching, you’ll be thinking.
Sports can help many at- risk youths. In order to participate in sports you need to be committed and willing to work hard. You also have to learn to respect others and accept that winning isn’t the only measure of success. Losing can build character as well. When youth participate in a sports they enjoy, they are less likely to engage in behaviors that are harmful or dangerous to themselves and others. It is for these reasons schools should strive to maintain athletic programs for their students.
