Sport Pedagogy: The Connection Between Education and Sports

Abstract
Sport pedagogy is a subdiscipline of kinesiology. It is commonly seen as the connection between sports and education. It is a relatively new discipline; having only been developed around 1960 and adopted within the U.S. around the 1990’s. It was slow to catch traction within educational institutions, but is now a globally accepted academic discipline within the field of kinesiology. Specialists within sport pedagogy can routinely be found teaching health related subjects within school systems. Of course, sports weren’t nearly as advanced as our modern-day competitions, but some aspect of sports can be found in virtually every culture. Sports have always interested us as a species, whether it be the footrace of the Ancient Olympics or the Super-bowl of modern society. There is one aspect of sports however, that is commonly overlooked within society; education. To participate in a sport, you must learn how to play it first, right? The discipline began to make an appearance around the 1960’s in Continental Europe. By the late 1970’s, sport pedagogy would be viewed as an academic discipline within Germany. Within German universities, sport pedagogy positions were offered within the sports and exercise departments. It wouldn’t be until around 1990 that the United States would adopt the term “sport pedagogy.” When the United States adopted the term however, physical education was already well established within the U.S. educational system; this led to early issues regarding terminology between the two. Sports are a popular pastime among all ages and types of people. People not only participate in them for fun, but also for money, physical fitness, rush of competition, and for many other personal reasons. Playing sports is especially common among young people in schools. Athletics are great and enjoyable for many reasons, but there can be a point where sports participation can go too far and become negative for children and adults. Sports specialization for young people is an increasing trend that results in sports having a negative impact on individuals and society.

The goal of this paper is to inform others of my reasoning why physical educators are important and why it is my dream to become one. There are three main points I would like to discuss: the value of physical education ,being a role model ,and why it is my dream to become one.
Sports programs have been an integral part of all schools. They support the academics of the school and therefore foster success in life. These programs are educational and help produce productive citizenship. They help students experience and build skills that may help them in their future, like interpersonal and time management skills. Education may kindle the light of knowledge, but sports help to maintain the proper physique. Sports are also an important means of entertainment and a use for energy after long hours of study. Sports increase a student’s performance not only in the classroom but also in their life.

Sports are loved and appreciated by America today more than ever before, offering exclusive lessons to athletes that cannot truly be learned any other way. Athletics provide athletes with once in a lifetime opportunities to better themselves, along with aiding young athletes in chasing success. Today everyone admires the lessons that successful athletes have learned, lessons they will carry with them for the rest of their life.
Many life lessons can be taught through sports. Children can learn the importance of work ethic, working with others, perseverance, and the list goes on. There are studies that have shown that kids who are involved in athletics are more successful in the business world. It is only when parents turn the sporting events into an ultra-competitive requirement for their child that it can become detrimental. The lessons that sports teach kids about real life is one of the greatest benefits that can be gained from sports. Because so much can be learned through sports we need to make sure that we put focus on teaching lessons through sports rather than making it all about winning. It is a sad when parents turn a great beneficial thing into something that can be harmful for their children.
Physical education provides a variation of motor skills aimed to enhance the physical, mental, social and emotional development. The obesity statistics of 2009 quantified that childhood obesity rates have more than tripled since 1980 and in addition to concerns regarding chronic diseases, overweight and obesity incidences have even led to poorer levels of academic achievement (Taras & Potts-Datema, 2005). Additionally, in order to teach students the importance of preventing these ailments, those who oppose the amount of time in physical education or want to cut it out altogether should reconsider. Instead, time in physical education should be as equal as core subjects are seen. Physical education can help children in the classroom as well. Sport Education is physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs. It usually makes the kids want to be competitive with one another and it teaches them the importance of a winner and loser. This type of teaching method helps students learn how to play sports and gets them involved. The earlier you start using this method, the earlier the children learn the basic functions and skills behind activities. When children start to understand the sport or activity that is being taught, they will want to start doing more activities in and outside of the classroom. Sports are a very important in a persons life because it keeps you involved, physically fit, healthy, and it shows the importance of competition and teamwork.
Sport and exercise psychology is a mandatory aspect of the sport science discipline. This discipline contributes to the various professional practices associated with physical activities such as - teaching of physical education, recreation and health promotion, and kinesiology related professions - because it plays a mental role for the participants. Sport and exercise psychologists view physical activity in several different ways: physical activity as a tool for health, physical activity as a tool for human potential, and physical activity as a tool for social change. This aspect of psychology may be the most important aspect of physical activity, because of the contributions of exercise and sport psychology to health, human potential, and social change.
In this essay, the role and benefits of Physical Education and School Sport will be identified from in and outside the school curriculum. The benefits that pupils have gained from the national school curriculum, what has changed from the past to present day in schools and how it has affected Physical Education in School Sport will be discussed. Also, mental and physical health benefits that occur from Physical Education will be mentioned in this essay along with what the teaching standards were like and how Physical education has changed such as different teaching ways.
