Luther Paper In Martin Luther’s Freedom of a Christian, freedom comes in many forms, mainly: Earthly and Spiritual. Because Earthly freedom happens on Earth and Spiritual freedom happens in Heaven there can only be speculation of the components of Spiritual freedom. Which explains why one cannot have Spiritual freedom without first having Earthly freedom. I will argue that Martin Luther depicts Earthly freedom as Christ in a mortal form and Spiritual freedom as Christ, the Son of God, in a spiritual form making it the greater of the two. Assuming one already has accepted the gift of faith, Earthly freedom is the next obvious goal. Earthly freedom is the training of the body to connect to the mind by faith. There are two parts to this Earthly freedom: first being control of the mind and second being control of the body, Luther describes this as “The Human Being as Inner and Outer Person” respectively (Luther 51). Control of the mind begins with faith. Faith magnifies the discourse in the body and the mind. “For what the flesh desires is opposed to the Spirit, and what the Spirit desires is opposed to the flesh” Luther(51(Galatians 5:17)). So as mentioned before when human souls have Spiritual freedom it was described as divine likeness. This time instead of Christ coming to the people in their mortal form, the people come to him in a soulful form. This is significant because if Christ, the Son of God, is Christianity in its purest way, then that means human souls are turning pure through their expanded faith from Earthly freedom. And since, “the law is laid down not for the innocent” there must be no law for the innocent and pure (that was written), because they follow an unwritten law of Christ (Luther 89). A law, which once understood fully needs no explainable words to justify it. This is true
