Later on, Scrooge receives a visit from an old ghost friend of his, Jacob Marley. Marley used to be not only Scrooge 's friend, but his partner as well; until he died several years ago. Marley has done some terrible things in the past, when he died, he didn 't end up in the best place, so him hoping to help scrooge from sharing the same fate as him, warns him that he will get three super natural-visit from from three spirit during the next three nights. These three super-natural spirits are called: The ghost of Christmas past, The ghost of Christmas present, and The ghost of Christmas yet to come.
The first of the Three Spirits is the "Ghost of Christmas Past" which represents Mr. Scrooge’s memory. Memory here serves as a reminder to Mr. Scrooge that he is still emotionally connected to other people, despite his withdrawal. The first memory that sparks Mr. Scrooge’s feelings is the scene from his childhood: the little boy Ebenezer that had to spend the Christmas holidays alone at his school.
Charles Dickens believed it was up to him to inform the people of Britain of the social problems occurring around Britain. While Dickens was a young man, he suffered from poverty along with his mother and father. His father was imprisoned for dept and Charles wanted to become a social reformer. Dickens used these problems as themes for his book ‘A Christmas Carol’. These themes involve poverty, pollution and a changing of ways. Dickens used Scrooge, the main character in the book at first to show how current society was at the time and then at the end, after the visits from the three ghosts, how the society could be. At the start of the book Scrooge is anti-social, greedy and extremely selfish. I believe this is how Britain was at the time. Then, after the visits from the three ghosts scrooge changed and I think that that is what Dickens wanted Britain to do.
In the play, Mr. Scrooge is a greedy man who thinks Christmas is “Bah Humbug!” (Dickens 3). His family has always wanted him to join them for a Christmas feast, but Mr. Scrooge has never wanted anything to do with Christmas. Marley, Mr. Scrooge’s old business partner, didn’t want Mr. Scrooge to end up like him with chains of greed attached to him when he died, so he sent Mr. Scrooge three spirits: Christmas Past, Present, and Future. Those three spirits visited each day to haunt him about his Christmases. Eventually, he traveled with two of the three spirits, but when the spirit of Christmas Future arrived, Mr. Scrooge realized that he would die in a few years. Ebenezer begged for mercy and promised to celebrate Christmas with joy and festivity. (Dickens 7-32) After the haunting with the spirits, Mr. Scrooge woke up and asked a boy what day it was. When the little boy, Adam, replied that it was Christmas, he ordered the boy
Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol is considered by many to be a classic for all the ages, if an objectivist point of view is used to analyse the social and political undertones of the story they will agree with most of it, if not all of it. One of the major parts that an objectivist would agree with in A Christmas Carol is how scrooge thinks of and how he treats the poor and infirm. Scrooge further develops his objectivist ideology by being completely self-interested in both his personal and professional life. After Scrooge is visited by the three apparitions he is radically changed from a self-interested, objectivist, to a positive and uplifting altruist. In Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol, an objectivist would agree with Scrooge’s original ideology but would struggle with Scrooges outward manifestation at the end of the story.
I saw A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens on Saturday, November 9th 2013, produced by the Trinity Repertory Company at 206 Washington Street in Providence Rhode Island, performed in the Elizabeth and Malcolm Chace Theatre on opening night of the season. Charles Dickens also wrote the famous Oliver Twist and A Tale of Two Cities. When A Christmas Carol was published in 1843, Christmas was just coming into vogue as a popular holiday. The play was adapted by Adrian Hall along with original music by Richard Cumming. My first impression of the play was that it was very elaborate, well prepared. The whole place smelled like a polished mansion and intentionally like apple cider. Cardis Furniture and Amica were the biggest sponsors. There was more older audience members than young people, which made me think they had seen other versions of the play before. I had seen the play at Trinity Repertory before and I was actually in A Christmas Carol at one time. The predispositions of most of the audience members was irritated, impatient and exasperated because of the long wait to get early tickets, then there was no seating to wait to get in upstairs, and once we all got in the theatre the seating was too crowded. This was all ridiculous, but I was just glad to get cheap seats. The price was “pay what you can” and I sat in the high up on the side is Aisle 6, Section 5, Row J, Seat 506.
This week I watched the movie , "A Christmas Carol." My teacher said that it would be a good movie for us to watch. Come to find out, she was right. I liked it, and so did my classmate. Anyway have you ever wondered who influenced scrooge the most. Well, I have and my opinion is the Christmas ghost of the future influenced him the most. Now, I'm going to tell you three reasons why.
“Bah! Humbug!” In A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens there are many differences and similarities between the drama and the movie. They are both great stories, that share the magic of christmas to all. Ebenezer Scrooge is a greedy man and needs to change or else no good will come to his future. He wants to stay the same man but when the spirit of Jacob Marley comes and tells him to change he is to scared to talk. He is visited on Christmas Eve by three more spirits. That will change his future forever. But will he run out of time first? The changes that will take place are going to happen during the visit of the ghost of christmas past, the ghost of christmas present and the ghost of christmas future to discuss the similarities and differences.
My favorite part of the story is when the three ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future appeared in his house. Mr. Scrooge was very scared. The three ghosts hunted Mr. Scrooge but they also teach him what Christmas really is and for him not to be such a mean and grumpy old man. Ebenezer scrooge only has a few days to understand what Christmas really is before times runs out. I enjoyed this book because it tells the meaning of Christmas. Also it teaches people a lesson that you shouldn’t be all mean and grouchy just because you don’t like Christmas. I really like this book very much. I love Charles Dickens's
