My Need Of Sleep: Why Should You Need Sleep?

This past Thursday our college was visited by Dr. Roxanne Prichard, the topic? Sweet, needed sleep. Her studies follow the problem that college students do not get enough sleep, and speaking from personal experience I agree. I have always been very demanding for sleep, I have even been made fun of for wanting 8 hours of sleep. I try to arrange my work schedule, classes, worktime, and social time to make sure I get enough sleep. Now, thanks to Dr. Prichard, I can finally put support to my need of sleep! The speaker was introduced by student Anna Loveless who brought how many students were stressed and how many students were still tired when they woke-up. I took notice the hands openly answering and the murmured comments to friends at these questions, this topic was interesting to most of the student body. These two introducing questions became more involved once again when Dr. Prichard began her spiel. Right off the bat she mentioned that sleep is good and that we need more of it, students clapped in appreciation of this statement but much later their attitude changes to her words. The speaker brought up relevant quotes and referenced well-known figures, for example she used Salvador Dali, to introduce her topic. She mentioned circadian rhythm, sleep homeostasis, zeitgebers, and psychoactive substances all could be used to urge our bodies and minds to sleep. With each example there was a bit of verbal description and a picture to match. A part of me wistfully desired for more information and even felt that she almost ghosted over circadian rhythm, but I quickly got over it. Instead I was really invested to hear about why we need sleep.
