Being a servant to your baby,copying your child’s emotions,or taking your baby’s food, pretty normal right?Not, that was verbal irony, which Mark Twain’s “Speech On the Babies” and “Me Time” by Tina Fey both have through the use sarcastic situations, humorous scenarios, and over exaggerating things that come with being a parent. First off, Mr. Twain’s “Speech On The Babies” uses verbal irony that makes the story humorous through his different techniques. His speech is presented through the view of a soldier who explains to the audience how babies can impact your life. Also, he tells the reader how kids are in control, as well as how to parent them. He talks about all of these things listed above, but with a humorous, sarcastic and over stating twist to them. An example can be found near the middle of the speech as he over exaggerates the possible outcome with multiple children. “As long as you are in your right mind don't you ever pray for twins. For example, near the end of the passage the author uses sarcasm when telling the reader some of their favorite things to do when she has the time. “Stand over the sink and eat the rest of your child’s dinner while he or she pulls at your pant leg asking for it back.”In other words, take your child’s food and don’t give it back. The writer uses verbal irony, by being sarcastic because she doesn’t really want you to do this, but rather actually spend your time in a useful way. When you have a child or baby, it is hard to find time just to yourself, and the author is just telling you what not to do to make it more humorous.
