Throughout this semester in this this class, I have been faced with a tremendous amount of challenges, some that stumbled me, some that I in a way even conquered. This class has caused me many sleepless nights and a few nervous breakdowns. If I had to describe this class in two words, it would be an all around awkward struggle. Although, I’d have to say, I have seen such an enormous change in myself as well as my confidence throughout the duration of this semester. I have battled, conquered, and completely overcame things I never honestly knew I was able to. In my own opinion, I consider myself a better public speaker all around, both physically and mentally from where I have began. I am very curious to see if I continue to change and become a better public speaker or if I just run away from my next speech like I usually do. I know that I will use the techniques from this class in my future classes to help me relax and feel more confident when I get up in front of the class. As much as I do not want to say this, but I do believe that public speaking should be required. I say this because if I never took this class, I would still have such horrible anxiety towards making speeches in front of an audience. This class helps people become better speakers and feel more comfortable in front of a classroom. This class can help every student for the future because no matter what job you have in life, you are going to have to talk to people and maybe even in front of an audience. It is something that you are not able to run away from forever, no matter what, it will catch up to you. So this class should stay in all universities because it is a class that will actually help you grow, even if you are already a good speaker. Perhaps, also wondering if it actually will be informative for an individual can be something very intimidating. Kevin chose to talk about the World cup, something that has never brought much entertainment to me. The way that Kevin was talking, with so much passion shown to his audience caught my attention, not to mention the humor he used along with it. Presenting a speech to the class is as if one was having an ongoing conversation with strangers and letting them know why the topic brings so much interest to you. Not to mention, one must seem into it to not lose the audience interest, which is what Kevin did. This course has taught me many things. I was not aware that there was so much information to learn about communication, but I have been pleasantly surprised. This course has taught me better ways to communicate with my significant other, my family, my friends, my co-workers, as well as with strangers. I have greatly enjoyed each assignment because they challenged me to examine the flaws within my own communication style. I hope to employ the skills and tools I have learned in this course and apply them to all my future communications.
This summer, after I was informed that I had been offered a teaching assistantship, I was terrified. I was not sure that I was capable of teaching students about a discipline in which I still possessed such a conscious doubt of my own abilities. For most of my life I was what you might call a non-achiever. When my parents strongly suggested that I enroll in college (the other option being to leave the house) everyone around me just sort of held their breath waiting for my inevitable failure. Then a strange thing happened. I passed my classes, and even enjoyed them.
When I first registered for this class I was very scared. I was homeschooled most of my life, up until high school, and had not had the opportunity to talk in front of groups of people I didn’t know well. I did take a speech class in high school but it was very difficult for me because of my shy, reserved nature. I learned a lot in that class but since I was never comfortable giving speeches or being in front of the class, I thought that speeches were just not for me. This communications 101 class
Few people are fearless speakers. As students, we generally feel the rumble of butterflies in our stomachs, but the most we have to lose is a good grade.
However, the difficulties I was experiencing during my first year of high school made me realize that it was imperative to meticulously scrutinize the way I studied in order to ameliorate and become the student I used to be. Additionally, I became aware that my ability to speak English was affecting me, but later I came to the conclusion that if this was a determining factor in my performance in class, I had to challenge myself by engaging in more rigorous courses. As time went on, however, due to the fact that I was surrounded by students I considered to be far ahead, I felt very intimidated by my advanced classes. Furthermore, I became aware that some of my teachers from the advanced placement classes seemed to doubt my ability to perform at the level expected, just by hearing my accent. To be condemned to failure simply because I did not speak English the same way my fellow classmates did, was a terrible sinking feeling. Nonetheless, this circumstance made me very diligent in all my classes, for it made me very attentive to the topics discussed, and it made me evaluate the extent to which I studied. As a result, with my grades and work ethics throughout the year, I proved those teachers wrong and received an apology from the one I came to admire
When I entered my first college class, I felt slightly nervous. When I sat down in my Oral Communications class at 8:00 AM, I was thinking “How did I get here. I did this?” and “Did I lock the door when I left?”. I also thought “Will I be able to keep up?” and “What did I get myself into”. I remember feeling the same way about high school transitioning from middle school, but later I felt more comfortable about being in high school and the same happened in college too. The responsibility I have gained during this experience is incredible and has taught me to be a much more organized person. During this semester I was taught a process of how to write a paper and organize it. I found that all of these responsibilities have made me realize that I could definitely take the next step forward in my academic career. Each new experience I involve myself in has made me continue to grow and constantly learn something new. I am someone who has never really enjoyed English classes in the past and I when I registered for English 101 I only saw it as a requirement to graduate but I really did enjoy this English course and I know that it was something that was worthwhile for me.
I believe that, if I feel nervous in the future, I will not be afraid of this emotion like what I did before. This course provided me knowledge on how to make me relax. Little by little, I have gained the confidence of combating the fear of public speaking in this course. All these precious experience will continue benefiting me in the future. Thus, I am proud to say that I have fullfilled the course objectives and enhanced my public speaking

Coming into speech class, I mentally and physically prepared myself for what was in store. I never really like giving speeches, especially impromptu speeches. Signing up for speech was hard for me to do because I absolutely did not want to take it and was considering not taking it in high school and wishing that I would never have to take it. My fears for COMM 101 was being judged. I am not really one to care about what people think about me, but something about public speaking gives me a fear that people will judge me if I stutter or not be able to complete a speech. The student outcomes for this course are to incorporate and learn different forms of material that will help the student deliver a structured speech. In order to deliver logical and organized speeches. As well as learning to speak with confidence and to understand how to control their own individual body movement when delivering a speech. A student also has to learn how to apply concepts such as language, organization, support, and delivery. In order to effetely deliver an informative, persuasive, entertaining, and commemorate speak. Lastly, a student has to learn how to analyze individual speaks and the understand perspectives from all members of the community. When reading the opening lecture I cringed at the thought of dealing with communication. Sort of that belly ache feeling you get when you had to do an oral presentation in front of the class in elementary school. I understand have a number of strong qualities but self-image and my perception are still traits I long to improve.
Likewise, doing the first week notes on Chapter 1 of the textbook The Art of Public Speaking, really got me realizing that my anxiety of speaking to strangers isn’t against me. This course will assist me to get over it. Also, given my knowledge of learning that there is a difference between public speaking and conversions. One reason that stood out to me is that public speaking is more structured than regular conversation. But in the similarity, you do the communication process in a regular conversion as well the same thing in public speaking.
Public speaking is one of the most under rated skills learned in school, yet is one of the most valuable. The way you communicate shows a lot about you, and can influence other’s opinions of you. In every profession communicatiis important. Good communication skills, no matter what you plan to do in life, will help you out greatly and improve your chances against a harsh job market. I am majoring in Business Administration and Law, and communication is one of the biggest parts of business and law, yet communication is hardly ever taught in business classes for my major. I think that a communications class like public speaking, for example, should be not just for a college class, but taught in high school and middle school as well. I believe several classes would allow anyone to become an expert speaking. The only way to fully learn public speaking is to get up in front of people and talk to them. One can not learn public speaking from a book.
