Over the past 14 weeks we have defined the American south. The south endured many different challenges and hardships that make them unique to society. American South roots in Colonial Period; it is clearly defined after 1825. The South was known for its system of forced labor – the institutions of slavery. Mexican War opens the issue of the expansion of slavery. African Americans have helped shape the southern culture with food and religion. Industrial Revolution had created a need for raw cotton. Nations remain divided geographically as well as politically on slavery issues. In the movie Gone with the Wind, viewers are able to see what the South was like after Civil War and how naïve the soldiers were before the war. Religion is an important factor in the south it was used as a form power and control by many of the white folks. Van Woodard believed that the South was unique because southern history as a burden and heritage. Southern states were known for their small gossiping towns. Women were segregated as well.
