Acculturation wasn 't a term thatmany characters experienced in the movie, “Soul Food”. But one of the characters that experienced acculturation was Teri or Auntie Teri, who was the Aunt of the main character and narrator of the film. Teri, who was one of three sisters in the film, was the most successful sister in her family as far as financial stature. Teri 's parents moved to Chicago, after hardships of discrimination they faced as African Americans in Mississippi. Chicago was a new start for the parents and they sacrificed for their children by working at hard labor jobs. Teri, being studious in academics, became a lawyer. Success stories as far as going to college and earning high payed money from a career, isn 't immense in the African …show more content…

Lem discussed how hunting jobs was hard on him because of his criminal record and that the “White Man” was trying to keep black men down. And he told Bird that black women can 't understand the plight of being a black male in America. When Bird called upon an ex boyfriend to help Lem get a job unknowingly, he told Lem that “brothers” must stick together to help each other succeed. He wanted Lem to lend a hand and give an opportunity to another black man, like he gave an opportunity to Lem. If black men don 't look out for each other and support one another, then who will? That is what he was trying to explain to Lem, which was culture solidarity. A stereotype that was revealed was soul food, which is the name of the film. Soul food is a popular cuisine in the African American culture. It 's often assumed that all black people eat soul food. Another stereotype is that Grandma 's are the matriarch of the family setting. Another stereotype was Reverend Williams. Black pastors are typically portrayed to be vibrant, charismatic, exaggerators, passionate, and emotionally expressive. Stereotype also is that black people are religiously involved in christian churches. The family went to church every Sunday. Another stereotype was Bird owning a salon. A gay man worked at Bird 's salon was also a stereotype. Black families stick together through the good times and bad …show more content…

But medicinal value that Soul Food served was rejuvenation and optimism. Soul Food helped patch things together among the family, when they temporary separated after Mother Jo died. When they didn 't sit at the table on Sundays, their family relationship starts to crumble. Before Mother Jo 's death, she told her grandson (Ahmad) that he has to bring the family back together. He knew that getting them back together meant finding a way to get them to come together and feast at Mother Jo 's house. Family unity was a strong foundation that was built by Mother Jo. And to cherish her memory, Sunday dinners were to be a celebration of the life she lived and the connection the family will have always have with her and each other for the love of Soul Food and
