Sonnets 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16, and 17
The first 17 sonnets are addressed to a young man of exceptional beauty who is encouraged to father children. What is striking about this series is that there are exactly 17 sonnets that are all centred on encouraging the young man to marry and father children. Seventeen is an unusual and distinctive number that seems to indicate its own significance. The content of the sonnets shows no evidence of input to them from outside of the author during their development: no questions are answered, there is no change of direction in response to any feedback from the subject, they appear to be a preset series issued together. The deliberate intent of these sonnets and the fact that a sonnet itself conforms to regular numbering schemes also suggests that the series containing precisely 17 is not accidental.
The encouragement of a person to marry and father children is an unusual theme, if not unique, in the world of Elizabethan poetry. That the author himself should have been personally motivated to invest such time and effort and have the temerity to do such a thing strikes me as extremely unlikely. In an age of commissioned poetic works, this series of sonnets being commissioned from the author by another party seems to be the most plausible scenario by which such a poetic work could only come about.
The series betrays a lack of understanding of why the subject fails to marry and have children of his own accord:
Sonnet 3 asks what fair woman would not welcome the opportunity of being the subject's wife:
"For where is she so fair whose uneared womb
Disdains the tillage of thy husbandry?"
and what man would willingly fail to leave children:
"Or who is he so fond will be the tomb
Of his self-love to stop posterity?"
Sonnet 4 asks why the subject does not continue his legacy of beauty:
"Unthrifty loveliness, why dost thou spend
Upon thyself thy beauty's legacy?"
and why he fails to pass on his beauty in the form of children:
"Then, beauteous niggard, why dost thou abuse
The bounteous largess given thee to give?"
and what he will leave behind him when has died:
1. Everyone on the island begins to lose their minds once people begin to die. For example, General McArthur begins to speak to Vera about, “waiting for the end” (pg. 81) and, “No one is leaving the island” (pg. 82) once Anthony Marston and Mrs. Rogers die. He is coping with the terror by trying not to care, and thinking about his dead wife Leslie. However, he is finally killed when sitting alone, watching the waves. His death causes even more chaos and terror among the remaining seven. Dr. Armstrong does not cope well either, and “breaks out into nervous torrents of speech” (pg. 136) and was a “pitiable condition of nerves” (pg. 136) until he was finally killed. He is pushed off a cliff and drowns.
...and the test of time. As mentioned previously the short concise verses that form a hypnotic rhythm are able to speak to a greater mass of people and bring them together in once voice. A rallying call that emphasizes that people will not go quietly into their houses and ignore what is going on but will take a stand to make things better. “The Times They Are A-Changin” is a timeless song due to the way it was written, sources of influence, and the portrayed meaning it conveyed to the masses.
Solzhenitsyn complains about the western allies supporting and aligning with the USSR. He offers explanations to why the allies decided to aid USSR against Nazi Germany. However, although his arguments are somewhat valid, Solzhenitsyn is missing two main keys and reasons to why the west aligned with Soviet Russia. First, The USSR signed a pact with Germany and even aided Germany take over Eastern Europe. This is problematic because if both Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia work together with Imperial Japan, the Allies had no chance. The Allies needed to divide these nations. This same tactic was worked in the 1970’s with China. Convince China to become “enemies” with soviet Russia. Why would the US support a horrible dictator like Mao Zedong? To prevent a collaboration of communist superpowers that could overrun the world overnight. And second, The Allies simply had no real proof of the atrocities being committed by Stalin during his reign.

The Board of Education wants to add hours to the school schedule. The problem proposed is American student’ test scores are falling behind counties in Europe and Asia. To see how more time in school will affect students and test scores, schools in Iowa, North Carolina, and California have increased the time some students spend in class. Some parents and faculty members think extending the school year into the summer could help American students compete academically with other countries, but the school year should not be extended because summer is needed for academic respite, the extension will cost millions, and there is not enough evidence to say that it can boost academic achievement.
Though Malcolm X and Gandhi are not seemingly related, both share a great deal of similarities and differences in physical appearance. While their actions and word spoke loud; the way they dressed caught just as much attention as well as in-born traits. Their darker skin tones initiated their desire to overcome oppression and achieve justice. Malcolm X transitioned from different style of suits as he grew up and changed locations. Both wanted rights for their groups, but their person philosophies influenced them as people, and the way they dressed very differently.

This course was the first course I took as an incoming freshman, as you, I was scared and nervous at the same time. My first course in college and it is a writing course, I was hesitant if I wanted to stay, but that changed later on. Coming back from summer break, I found it extremely hard to simply come back in and write, even as a high school student let alone as a college student. The fear that my old high school teacher placed in me did not help the case either, saying that once you go to college, your professors would not care about knowing your name or your grade. In addition, a professor that would try to find the littlest errors marks off to make your grade suffer. In contrast, I found that the professor and the course were not so intimidating, a professor that allows office hours just to help you improve your essays, and subjects that are seemingly more interesting than I thought. Enc 1101 has helped me learn more about myself and my writing skills allowing me to self evaluate and become motivated to change.

In “Sonnet XVII,” the text begins by expressing the ways in which the narrator does not love, superficially. The narrator is captivated by his object of affection, and her inner beauty is of the upmost significance. The poem shows the narrator’s utter helplessness and vulnerability because it is characterized by raw emotions rather than logic. It then sculpts the image that the love created is so personal that the narrator is alone in his enchantment. Therefore, he is ultimately isolated because no one can fathom the love he is encountering. The narrator unveils his private thoughts, leaving him exposed and susceptible to ridicule and speculation. However, as the sonnet advances toward an end, it displays the true heartfelt description of love and finally shows how two people unite as one in an overwhelming intimacy.
Preparation for marriage cannot be provided at once, by the end of any schools, courses for the future spouses or through listening to a series of lectures. Character of a man with his adequate manifestations cannot create in a month, six months or a year before the wedding. Living together requires constant coordination among partners on which depends the fortress marital bonds. Ability to adapt to the habits, character traits of another person, understanding its spiritual movements and states are key indicator of human preparedness for marriage.
