In Sojourner Truth’s “Ain’t I a Woman?” speech she confronts multiple assumptions and stereotypes about women. Truth is addressing assumptions that women are not physically or mentally strong enough to take care of themselves let alone vote. Truth gives examples of these assumptions of how a man believes that women need to be helped into carriages, lifted over ditches, along with, not being able to eat or work as a much as man. She is addressing how some men did not believe that a woman could take care of herself. Truth attempted to persuade the audience by giving examples from her past including having thirteen children, in which most were sold off to slavery. Imagine loosing just one child or loved one, the pain in unimaginable. Truth had near all of her children sold into slavery, she could never see or hear from again. Truth still had the mental and physical strength to continue believing and not breaking, eventually to escape from slavery. Telling her audience about her unimaginable situation and then standing right there in front of them delivering an amazing, heart felt speech was her way to help reach her audiences hearts and emotions to help …show more content…

One of the best and most compelling moments of her speech is when she told the audience about her thirteen children. The simple fact that she had thirteen children in that day of age is miracles. The thought of a losing a single child to death, or being sold to slavery is absolutely unthinkable. The pain that the Mother must feel would be near unbearable. Then to think that Sojourner Truth birthed thirteen children not just into slavery, but to be sold off so they could not even grow up with their mother. It’s is probably the worst childhood you could think of. The easy route would be to just give up, but Truth escaped and was able to speak at the convention.
