What is Sociology? Sociology is the systematic or scientific study of human society and social behavior. I chose Sociology for my discourse community because I felt out of all my courses, this course fits the six characteristics of discourse community the best. This class is held Tuesday and Thursday in Jennett Lecture hall from 9:30 to 10:45. Dr. Lowney is the professor for this course and has been studying Sociology for over 20 years. When selecting my classes in May, Sociology was a course already selected for me because I am a part of a FLC, or First Year Learning Community. The class consist of 200+ students, who are mostly in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. We are divided into nine different FLCs, all named after a Sociologist. …show more content…

During this lecture, we discussed macroscopic theoretical perspectives. Before we start our notes for the day, Dr. Lowney gives us a clicker question that refers back to the previous lecture. She does this every class in order to ensure that we are studying over our notes. As we progress through the class, we begin to discuss structural functions and what it focuses on. She lists seven basic social institutions: family, religion, politics, economy, etc. She requires us to memorize these for our upcoming test. She explains that each social institution has a function, manifest, and latent. The assignments we get during lectures and outside of class are helpful tools to get the student to be able explain the concept of the course and see how an individual’s behavior is influenced by their surroundings. Understanding discourse communities can help me throughout college because I feel it will make classes easier when it comes to understanding the goals of the course. If you view a class as a discourse community it will also make it easier to communicate with one other because you may share the same interest in that
