In America, there are many families going through divorce or being affected by divorce. There are several reasons as to why adults choose to divorce their spouse. Looking at the issue from a conflict theorists point of view, there are several contributing factors in both the male and female that go into a declining relationship. There are also many negative effects that divorce has on the family and their children because of those reasons. Bruce F. Dykeman, Marita p. McCabe and Stacey Richardson, and Linda Nielsen discuss their different points of view on children of divorce.
In regards to Family Systems, conflict theorists believe that marriage is a struggle for control of the relationship. Many couples fight over who gets more free time and leisure (Think Sociology, p. 258). According to Think Sociology, marital conflict sometimes centers on the division of household labor, and our two most scarce resources: energy and free time (Think Sociology, p. 258). In the past, women were often times known as homemakers, where as the men are the ones who bring in the income to provide for the family. These are roles that were automatically assumed. Since times have changed and most women and men are working, it is difficult for some women to feel satisfied with having to do all the housework. Households are sometimes run in a sense that all of the work is equal. Men are expected to do so much and so is the woman. However, there are women who are still assuming their position as the homemaker. In The Second Shift, women seem to accept this role as something they cannot change. (Think Sociology p. 287). Such conflict can ultimately result in a divorce.

...why divorce is allowed. The first reason is if one has committed adultery and is not willing to repent (Matthew 19: 8-9), the second is if one spouse is not a Christian and permanently deserts the Christian spouse (1 Corinthians 7:15). Christians can choose to obey or disobey by this, but it is their decision.
Divorce is a serious matter, whether it is proven to have affects on individuals or not, it is not something that people wish to endure. Bruce F. Dykeman, Marita p. McCabe and Stacey Richardson, and Linda Nielsen have all done great research on the outcomes of a divorce on children. Conflict theorist as well have done great job on providing factors that go into a divorce. While there are some positive outcomes from children of divorce, the majority of the research provided by the researchers above conclude that there are more negative impacts than positive.
