Social Work Reflective Essay

I was drawn to the field of social work due to my personal experiences and the impact they had on my life. I grew up in a turbulent environment, one of two children in a broken home with an alcoholic father. Our father worked two jobs to support my mother, sister and myself to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table. Although he worked hard to provide for our family, his own demons caused him to be verbally abusive towards my mother, sister, and myself. At the same time, I was struggling with my sexual identity, and during middle and high school I was bullied because of my sexual orientation. These experiences caused me to have anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. I sought help for my struggles and pain and grew to become the strong and resilient person I am today. It is crucial that every child and their family have the resources that they need regardless of their race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, nationality, or socioeconomic background. I want to serve those who are from vulnerable backgrounds. Working in the social work field provides millions of children and families with the help and resources they need without judgment. Too often, people do not know where to go for support or how to ask for help. Social work provides assistance, whether it is connecting them to resources or advocating on a client’s behalf. My time working in the social worker field, I have learned how to provide clients with the resources they need to better their lives and/or advocate for themselves.
