I have always had a long standing respect for social workers. I believe them to be completely selfless individuals who sometimes are forced into making unpopular decisions that are ultimately made for the right reasons, and I have nothing but respect for that. Any encounters I have had with social workers in my life thus far have been wholeheartedly positive and I have found that they have had a positive impact on both my professional and academic development. I took great inspiration from my time spent volunteering as an online housing advisor at the homeless charity Shelter where I learned the power of listening, observation and empathy go a long way in helping someone who is less fortunate than yourself. The course is designed to build awareness of issues associated with inclusion and disability, special needs education, as well as education and technology, sociology of childhood and education, philosophy and psychology of education. I have found the course to be both very inspiring and motivating and it has played a huge factor in me wanting to study further. Some of the modules I have been performing particularly well in have been social policy, equality and disability matters and social justice.
Earlier this year my university gave me a fantastic opportunity to work as a classroom assistant in Toll Bar Primary School. During my time spent here I provided classroom support to children with a wide range of learning, physical and behavioural difficulties. Although it wasn’t always easy it was always extremely satisfying to see the benefits of my work, especially in children so young. I also assisted with schoolwork under the supervision of the teacher and helped out with numerous out of classroom activities and sporting
