1. I became interested in social work because of my social work 101 course. Growing up, I always knew that I like helping people. I would assist my family, friend and neighbors when they needed assists. so when time came to or me to decide what I wanted to do in live, I chose become a nurse.I thought that nursing would be the right professional for me. After attending college and taking some nursing classes, I felt that it was not the profession that I wanted to be part of. This lead me to social work. I did not know much about social work. There are many reasons as to why I decided to pursue a degree in social work. One major reason is that I 'm interested in helping individuals and making changes. Another reason is I became more educated about the social work profession. After learning what a social worker was and what they do, I felt that this was the right profession for me. In addition, another reason is I believe as a social work, I can become more competent about individuals, society, social injustice and how to help individuals who are vulnerable. Some career interests and goals that I have is to become more competent about individuals, society, and social injustice. Another goal, is to make changes that promote the well-being of individuals. Becoming more experienced and skilled is another career goal that I have. I chose to pursue Social Work due to my philosophy of justice and believing in the progression towards a just world, or as Gandhi puts it; being the change you wish to see. I wanted a career that allowed me to work with people and provide help to individuals in need. I wanted a career that strives to provide equal opportunity for all people and works to end the dilemmas our society faces.
The Masters degree of Social Work (MSW) is a degree that defines who you are and where you are going career-wise. If you are getting a Masters Degree in social work you are most likely going into the field of social work. This deems the question of why I want to go into the specific field of social work. A main reason for me to go into the field of social work is that social work fits my set of values moreso than any other field I am qualified for. Social work is a profession inherently about helping people improve their lives. That kind of work is noble and something I would like to do for the rest of my life. I have always wanted to do things and have a career that would help people and empower their lives. I believe helping people is the only way I can have a clear conscience and sleep well at night. My personal values center around helping people but also about helping people help themselves and improve their own lives. I do not want to treat people who utilize social work services as charity cases or as victims. That is not fair to those people and strips them of their humanity. I hope I can utilize my career as a social work to do as much good as possible in the United States and in the world.
I knew I loved to help others but it was not until I was an emerging adult that I knew what my calling was. My devotion to improve the quality of life for those who are disadvantaged is one of the reasons I have chosen to pursue a Master’s in Social Work. After obtaining my masters, I plan on diversifying my masters by getting licensed and becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. There are many reasons why I decided that I wanted to work in the social work profession. When I first enrolled in college, I was a nursing major with the mindset of becoming a neonatal nurse. When that did not go as planned, I decided to become a social work major because I knew I would receive the same reward of helping someone out and providing an individual with a better opportunity by lending him or her a hand. This was my first reason for choosing this career because I saw so many benefits from this profession. My second reason for was due to the fact that I want to help people during their time of need. There were times in my life where I needed guidance and it felt great to have someone there being compassionate and caring towards me.
There is no one motivating factor that stered me to the field of social work. It was the totality of events and experiences in my early childhood that opened my eyes to the field of social work. The decision to pursue a career in social services was decided upon after many years of reflection, contemplation, soul searching, and questions. Before beginning the journey into my dream career, I ask myself a series of questions. What can I offer as a social worker? Can I set aside my own perceptions and values? What populations or situations would I feel uncomfortable working with, if any? Am I empathic enough to not only feel but understand? What is my motivation for pursuing a career in social services?
A straightforward, transparent profession holds no fulfilling qualities for me. A gratifying career is only earned through many days of full dedication, perseverance and hard work. Providing an important service back to the surrounding community is not only a righteous cause, but a career I want to devote myself to. Social work presents the opportunity to make this difference in the most intimate format, face-to-face. Originally, I dreamed of pursuing a career involving wildlife much like my father, however after attending a career day function in sixth grade I knew I wanted to pursue the profession of social work. Seeing that deep of a passion in someone in their field of work was both astounding and breathtaking. The presenter that day glowed with such eagerness to share the love of her job that she had with us. It motivated me to look into social work as a serious option for my future. With vigorous research and finally job shadowing I knew this was the career I truly desired. Furthermore, social work has aided me in countless occasions such as my struggles regarding pursuing education as a female.

A personal experience that influenced my decision to enter the field of social work is when I joined the military after high school. While serving, I was able to assist the Director of the Combined Federal Campaign. This is a major campaign that is sponsored by the military and United Way, and it is geared towards raising money for nonprofit agencies. I enjoyed visiting various agencies, organizing events, as well as educating people about the available resources within their communities. Kris became a social worker because she has a passion and needs to help people. Her passion comes from years of abuse and neglect when she was younger. She stated, “It feels right to be a social worker. Although there is no thank you cards and the work may be meticulous at times, seeing smiles is a great reward”. I have chosen social work as a profession because of my passion to help others. I want to make a difference in someone’s life and help them through the problems they are having. I want to become a social worker to help connect people to available resources when they may be in a place of injustice or despair and offer them the guidance they may need to make important decisions that can be life changing. My reasoning behind deciding to pursue a career in social work stems from my seemingly innate desire to see others succeed in fulfilling their potential. Although it feels somewhat of a cliché, my passion and desire for the field of social work originates from a genuine wish to make a positive difference in people’s lives.
My interest persisted and grew as I began to see how my efforts had the ability to improve the lives of people around me. I first noticed this on a personal level as friends would come to me for advice or for me to listen to their struggles and provide comfort. No matter how mundane, horrific, unique, or common the story was, I listened to them in a genuine and non-judgmental manner. I truly enjoyed hearing people’s stories and providing comfort and advice when needed. These moments helped me realize the power of simply being there for someone, and it increased my interest of pursuing a career where I can support those who need it most. I want to become a social worker so I can provide direction to those who may not be able to get it from other sources, just like I have done for various people throughout my life.

However, after talking with my advisor I was told that I would be able to go into psychology with a bachelor’s degree in social work. My advisor also told me that the professions are similar. I took her advice and started a new goal, to get my BSW. Coming into my first class on the field of social work, I wasn’t too sure what to expect. All I knew is that the profession was connected to helping people. After learning more about the profession and the wide range of options that accompany it, I started to get excited. I could work with many different types of people on a range of issues and changing which area I work in would be relatively easy. I have always wanted to help people with mental health issues and I thought that social workers only did that in school settings. Learning that I just needed to get my Masters to be able to do therapy made me feel great about choosing to become a social worker. Having options has made my college experience better by getting me excited for what the future holds.
