Leadership is a process of influencing others to achieve a goal. It has been defined as “the ability of an individual to influence, motivate, and enable others to contribute toward the effectiveness and success of the organizations in which they are members” (House, Hangars, Javidan, Dorfman, & Gumpta, 2004, pp. 15). Social work professionals require leadership knowledge in order to better understand and meet the challenges of working within multifaceted and diverse urban social settings that tackle a variety of current social service issues. The principles of collective responsibility, human rights, respect for diversities, and social justice are vital to social work. Social work also engages people and structures to address life challenges and enhance overall wellbeing. The social work profession has sought to enhance the welfare of mankind in all walks of life, which includes taking responsibility for the development of others, in addition to self. Social work professionals must begin their leadership journey by understanding and managing themselves, so that they can be in service to the communities, groups, individuals, and organizations they serve. Terry’s approach can be used to give leaders a tangible method for determining what the issue truly is and what can be done about it that would be most effective to the leader, followers, and organization. It tackles what is real and true by facing it openly, embracing fears, actively engaging with life, and working for the common good. Authenticity moves around the action wheel and expands possibilities. This is another good approach for social workers because it is about knowing and acting on what is real; it helps to make wise adept choices, both singularly and collectively.
