Statement of Purpose My desire to choose social work as a profession occurred as a child many years ago. I always had a passion to work with children every since I was young. Growing up with a mother who owned an in home childcare I was always around children. Observing how my mother helped the low- income children and families in our neighborhood really inspired me to want to help children and families in some shape or form. So I knew that I was going to either become a teacher, counselor, or social worker. I guess I couldn’t make up my mind, so I got my associates degree in Elementary Education and my bachelor’s degree in Psychology. Now I want to pursue my master’s in Social work, I think …show more content…
In order for a career in social work to be effective the person has to possess the core values which are: service, social justice, inherent dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence. My feelings about working with different populations are that this is great! I love to see different people from different cultures and backgrounds come together. Cultural diversity assembles people with sundry skills, ingenuity and cognizance for efficacious productivity. A diverse group has incremented adaptability, a variety of viewpoints on an issue and innovation. In a gregarious setting, diversity breeds curiosity in people and gives them a chance to learn and experience practices and traditions from other …show more content…
I would relish fixating on ascertaining the gregarious, physical, psychological and emotional salubrity of children. In 2013, there were 402,378 children and youths in foster care and 19,499 adolescent people aged out of foster care. It is withal estimated that 1,484 children die each year due to child abuse and neglect, and most experts report that this number could be much higher. Ascertaining that the desiderata of children who experience or who are in jeopardy for maltreatment are addressed is critical as the impact of adverse childhood experiences cascades throughout the lifetime, resulting in higher risks for health and noetic health issues, and adverse economic and employment
I knew I loved to help others but it was not until I was an emerging adult that I knew what my calling was. My devotion to improve the quality of life for those who are disadvantaged is one of the reasons I have chosen to pursue a Master’s in Social Work. After obtaining my masters, I plan on diversifying my masters by getting licensed and becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I would like to study social work because I feel it will lead me directly to one of the most emotionally fulfilling careers available, as well as giving me the chance to combine helping people 's mental well being with their physical
I decided to go after a general Masters of Social Work degree so I can work in a large variety of settings and be as marketable as possible. I would like to go into some sort of counseling involved with social work but I would like to see where life takes me. If I became employed in another aspect of social work that would be amazing. I also hope to be a social worker in New Jersey but if another state or country needed my services and skills, I would go there instead. The future is wide open for me but I know I want to be a social worker and I am dedicated to this profession.
I come to Fordham University with expectations of completing my Masters of Art degree in Social Service. As a single parent, I have faced many challenges raising my special needs child. My personal, academic and profession experience has given me the opportunity
1. What relationships and/or experiences influenced your decision to enter the field of Social Work? A personal experience that influenced my decision to enter the field of social work is when I joined the military after high school. While serving, I was able to assist the Director of the Combined Federal Campaign. This is a major campaign that is sponsored by the military and United Way, and it is geared towards raising money for nonprofit agencies. I enjoyed visiting various agencies, organizing events, as well as educating people about the available resources within their communities. This was definitely a season of growth; furthermore, after careful research I discovered the field of social work was the best profession for me. This was

I have known that I wanted to go into the field of Social Work since my first year of undergraduate studies at SUNY at Fredonia. I entered SUNY at Fredonia as a major in secondary education, with a concentration in English. It was during my first semester of my freshman year that I had taken an introductory course in psychology. I realized then that I wanted to work with people, but not in the capacity as a secondary education teacher, but in a career in mental health. My professor spoke with such enthusiasm about the subject of psychology and psychopathology and soon, I found myself intrigued with these subjects. I wanted to help individuals who needed the help, especially knowing the stigma mentally illness exists in society.
I became interested in social work when my dear mother unexpectedly got sick, and the hospital diagnosed her with stage four cancer. The doctors told us she only had a few months to live. I decided against the nursing home option and instead brought my mom home from the hospital to take care of her by myself. The hospital and hospice helped me by sending the registered nurses, the home health care nurses and the social workers in my home to help me provide the best care for my ailing mother. Consequently, I devoted all my time to caring and helping my mom. This experience was my first encounter with a social worker in my life, and I was impressed by the social worker kindness, care and compassion. Immediately, after the passing of my mom, I decided to go back to school to study and work toward becoming a social worker myself.
I chose to pursue a degree in Social Work because I have a deep passion for helping people figure things out and get back on track. I have always tried to help people in the simplest ways without being over intrusive and giving them the respect and dignity they deserve. As a teen I found joy in the slightest things like helping people fill out and submit job applications, filling out medical forms, and explaining to them the process for things such as obtaining Medicaid, food stamps, their food handlers card and even on where and how to apply for your driver’s license. These things may seem trivial but I guarantee that for many people this was a huge help. Working with people is not just something that happens; first you have to want to help people and be patient and understanding with the people who you are helping and that does not happen overnight, second, you must be able to recognize your own limitations and know when to refer someone to qualified professionals.
I want to become a social worker to help connect people to available resources when they may be in a place of injustice or despair and offer them the guidance they may need to make important decisions that can be life changing. Also, I am interested in being a social worker because the work can be extremely rewarding. I do understand, some days will be extremely difficult, but I also understand that when you can go home at the end of the day, knowing you’ve done your best to help someone, that is a rewarding feeling and I will know that I chosen the right career path. I also believe strongly that people are inherently good and capable of doing good. All together, through different day to day experiences and my drive to do good and help facilitate change are just some of the reasons I am applying to a professional degree of social
As a student who began her college career without specific objectives, I never thought I would be writing a personal statement for an application to receive a Master’s Degree in the social work profession. However, I feel now that there is no other future for me than that of offering my education and personal commitment to vulnerable individuals in order to stabilize their lives. After careful consideration of all areas of social work, I have found that my main area of interest is in providing resources and encouragement for individuals with disabilities to gain the freedom to live independent lifestyles without discrimination. My personal goal in this profession is to make every possible effort in assisting these individuals with finding the means to satisfy their needs.
My interest in social work stems from a love of volunteering that I possessed ever since I was a young child expressing great enthusiasm for church and school service events. As I grew older, I began volunteering for many other community events, such as serving over 200 hours at a local hospital, helping with free cancer screenings, and fitting children with free bike helmets. I even created my own donation drive for a local women’s and children’s shelter. I feel the best when I am striving to create positive changes in my community and for struggling, marginalized individuals. Social services have been a part of my life for a very long time, and I want it to continue to be on a professional level.
"Do not become a social worker. You will not make any money and you will be stressed out all the time." My maternal grandparents were foster care parents from the 1980 's until April of this year. In that time they hosted over 250 children from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. As a child, I spent much of my time at my grandparents house and was exposed to the multiple aspects of the foster care system. I became close with the social workers who came to my grandmother 's house and when it came time for me to make a career choice, they all discouraged me from becoming a social worker. Despite their warnings I graduated with my Bachelor 's of Social Work from Saint Louis University in 2013 and began to work on my Master 's in Social Work in August of 2014.
I want to obtain my bachelor’s degree and secure a job as a direct social worker. This will allow me to gain experience and broaden my knowledge in the field of social work. As a direct social worker, I will be able to work with children, adults and families. I will be able to also work with people in crisis to include child abuse, rape and domestic violent cases. All this experience will help me determine exactly what field I want to specialize in as I further my education. While working as a direct social worker, I am going back to school to obtain my master’s degree. Ultimately, I want to obtain a master’s degree and go into the clinical setting. Once I earn my master’s degree, I want to immediately start working under the supervision of a licensed clinical social worker to obtain the hours I need to take the state exam. Once I pass the state exam I will apply for my license to advance in my career. Eventually I want to be an advocate for the social justice of
I strongly believe that my urge to become a social worker stems from the frightening idea of what would have happened with my grandmother as well as my own parents; had they not had someone helping them. I understand that not every older adult or young child has the good fortune of having family members care for them. I am also aware that some face neglect and more often than not, abuse from family members or those trusted to care for them. I feel that I can be an advocate for those older adults or children that are neglected or abused. I feel that the masters in social work program would give me the theoretical foundation as well as the intensive training that is necessary to become a successful social worker.
