There are certain things you need to do to able to work in this type of field of Social work. At least a Master’s degree in social work (SW) or Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT). Depending on your field (SW or MFT) you will be required to collect a certain amount of hours before you can become licensed. You can begin collecting your hours while in school (practicum student) and become an intern once you graduate. As a Marriage and Family therapist, you are required to obtain 3,000 hours. The hours are broken down into several different categories: child hours, supervision, individual counseling, etc. It can take an MFT about four to six years to obtain all the hours needed. Adrianna said since she works at a clinic, a typical day can consist of meeting with patients and connecting them to needed services. These services include medical, housing, food, counseling, psychiatric, legal, etc. This can be done in combination with counseling. Patients are sometimes distraught and need to be emotionally stabilized before connecting with them to any type of service. It mostly depends on where you work. People in this role, can become supervisors. They can work in hospitals, churches, schools, businesses, or private practices. She said it’s a growing field. The awareness behind mental health is increasing. I also asked her about her personal experience of her career. Some of the questions I asked her was if she like her work, the pressure, and control of her time. She said she liked her work, but like any position, there will be times that are more stressful than others. It all comes down to time management and organization. “Overall, I can say that I’m satisfied”, said Adrianna. The majority of the people in this field are women. For the most part, I haven’t experienced any harassment of discrimination. It’s not uncommon for patients to develop romantic feeling for their therapist or social workers.
