Case Summary: Reese, a social worker who works with parent education and psychoeducational groups with children is being charged with incompetence. These groups deal with issues of behavioral and impulse control. While in a group setting she had the children draw pictures of a time that they did something without stopping to think about it. One of the members of the group; Sam a nine year old, drew a picture that was concerning to Reese. The picture was of Sam standing over his sister’s bed. When Reese asked about the picture Sam replied, “I know I shouldn’t touch her there, but sometimes I just do it without thinking.” Reese was concerned enough to talk to him after the group. This principle states that social workers should avoid causing harm and prevent harm from occurring to clients or others. Where harm is unavoidable, social workers should choose the course of least harm or most easily reversible harm (Rothman pg. 19). This is applied by the social worker determining if leaving immediately to make a report would cause the client more harm (Rothman 2014). Understand Client Values: This would be the time for the biopsychosocial assessment review. This would be a time for the family support system and family roles to be explored. It would also allow Reese to gain a better perspective of the family interactions. Explore Impact of Decision on Personal Values: This case brought out personal values of self-awareness and support system and these were difficult decisions for Reese since she is a mandate reporter. Self-awareness, Reese was aware that she could not just leave Sam in a vulnerable state after disclosing such personal information.
