Recommended: Implications for Social Work Practice

The relation among social work and counselling has been interactive and complex. Because two different activities they share certain theoretical origin and approach of thinking. Professionals that qualify in 1960s and 70s were stranded in casework values dependent over psychodynamic theoretical foundations. Subsequently, the times training of social work has moved within the direction by adopting social learning theories, systems theories and ecological and wide range of derivative practice approaches. From Marxist and radical methods of 80s and the anti-oppressive and anti-discriminatory practice development in 90s has reclaimed the real pre-occupation with social injustice, social exclusion and social inequalities, working with individuals …show more content…

At the same time, social policy expressed at the policy makers level, explains the broad routes occupied for alleviating social inequalities, the actual social work delivery that takes place through social work practice, an activity carried from thousands of social workers all over United Kingdom. Social work forces to use wide range of methods, actions and skills that are engaged in universal attentiveness on individuals and their environments (Baines, 2004). Interventions of social work vary from person focused psychosocial methods that are focused on individuals, social policy participation, and development and planning. These interferences involve clinical social work, social academic work, family treatment, psychotherapy, counselling along with efforts for assisting people for accessing resources and services in community. Social workers in daily activities must assume various roles which aim to put balance among emancipation and empowerment with support and protection. Balancing such dilemma is usually a complex method, this depends over the service users need and need social workers to assume more than “one role”. The relationship between social work and law has been developing since 1917, when Mary Richmond, an architect of modern social work, acknowledged the role of legal authorities while developing her conceptual model for casework (Forgelson, 1970). Later, Mary Richmond drafted an early social work code of ethics in the early 1920s (Reamer, 1987). However, from the development perspective, all 50 states in the US have passed statutes requiring professionals from certain disciplines, including social work and law, to report any abuse or crime happened in the past or is going to happen in the nearest future if there are good reasons to believe that is true. Dubose and Morris (2005) stated that very few states passed similar mandatory reporting statutes for attorneys. It is not surprising that only a few states accepted these statutes because of the presence of the attorney-client privilege statute, which is true for all states. Due to differences in the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct and NASW Code of Ethics, professionals from the respective disciplines may have conflicts while both provide social and legal support to the same client from a domestic violence organization.
