Satire to Address Inequalities Coming to America is an Eddie Murphy movie that came out in the late 80’s that depicts a young African Prince who is unhappy with the marriage traditions of his heritage and wants to seek his own bride (Folsey, 1988). While on the surface this movie is deemed a comedy and does offer amusement for its audiences it actually highlights several soci ,lological popular cultural concepts. Themes that can be seen throughout Coming to America are class systems, stereotypes, consumerism and social norms (Grazian, 2015). There were every few scenes in this film that did not contain some form of stereotyping. Unfortunately movies such as this one help to perpetuate stereotypes, they use them to provide entertainment. However, continuing to show minority individuals in stereotyping roles influence the general population (Grazian, 2015). Instead of seeing many young black men in successful roles in media they are often shown as the villain or members of a gang. These and other stereotypes were played throughout the film; one example would be when there was a black homeless man with a shotgun who tried to rob the McDowell’s restaurant (Folsey, 1988). These scenes may be humorous to many in the audience but stereotyping can have a negative effect on society. There was a good amount of attention in the film given to a few select advertized produces, which sets the theme for consumerism. Consumerism is the manipulation of consumers by big business through their advertizing (Grazian, 2015). Throughout Coming to America we see a product called “Soul Glo” which is a new hair product (Folsey, 1988). We see this product in television commercials; billboards, posters as well as seeing people use it during many scenes in this film.
