The term sex trafficking is usually associated with kidnapping of women and children used for sexual slave work. Unfortunately, the sad reality is that both genders without age limit can be taken; the common age tends to range from 14 to 16. According to Sharedhope International, sex trafficking occurs when someone uses force, fraud or coercion to cause a commercial sex act with an adult or causes a minor to commit a commercial sex act. When thinking about this we usually think it’s happening far from us. Although, one of the most popular places it happens is in Europe, it also happens in the U.S. as well. Sex trafficking is “ a multi-billion dollar criminal industry that denies freedom to 20.9 million people around the world (Polaris Project).” …show more content…
It is the fastest-growing business of organized crime and the third-largest criminal enterprise in the world (Rodriguez-Walker, Hill).” As the business has expanded it is more organized and brutal. In some cases victims work for little or no money. As FBI reports women are locked up in rooms or brothels for weeks or months, drugged, terrorized, and raped repeatedly. They drug them in order to make it easier for them to have control. Because these captives fear their traffickers they remain silent and do not take chances even when opportunities to escape are presented. Customers are considered “Johns.” More often than not traffickers who have more than one victim have a “bottom”. The “bottom” has been in the trafficking system the longest and has earned their trust. They collect money from other girls, discipline them and take charge of the day-to-day …show more content…
The safest precaution to take would be contacting an organization or police department. To be able to distinguish whether the person is in danger you can look for signs that include “inability for employees to come or go from work as he/she wishes. Employees living very close by or the same building as where they are employed, employees living together, traveling in groups or with their employer (Network of Victim Assistance).” As well as looking out for any physical abuse or nervousness when speaking about intimate subjects can help dictate whether someone is a captive. In conclusion, sex trafficking a form of slavery in today’s world. With that said, we need to limit this problem that is happening all over the world. Not only is it an expanded business internationally but also at the local level. This business endangers the young, naïve people of our society. It harms the survivors and takes lives from the one who aren’t fortunate to get away. All forms of law enforcement should be on the look out. Not only should society support the survivors but should be preventing such situations by putting a stop on bullying and
As victim count continues to rise, its difficult to see how such great numbers of men, women and children are bought and sold every year. Trafficking can be found in many forms, including: prostitution, slavery, or forced labor (Harf and Lombardi, 2014). It wasn’t until the 1980’s that international human trafficking became globally noticed. With the lack of government intervention and control in several nations, and the free trade market, slavery once again became a profitable industry (Harf and Lombardi, 2014). As previously mentioned, easier movement across nations borders is one of the outcomes of globalization. It is also what makes human trafficking so easy today. It is estimated that about 20.9 million people are victims across the entire globe (United Nations Publications, 2012); trafficking accounts for 32 billion dollars in generated profit globally (Brewer, n.d). 58 percent of all human trafficking was for the purpose of sexual exploitation, and of this 55-60 percent are women (United Nations Publications,
Many people are victims of sex trafficking and this horror must be stopped for the sake of the innocent girls and women who are being taken advantage of. Trafficking is a form of modern slavery because people’s bodies are sold for the gain of others against their wills. The steps that must be taken to prevent sex trafficking involve raising political and social awareness, people working together and the prosecution of traffickers.
Sex trafficking is a sex act by force where money is involved. Buying or selling someone for sexual acts. Examples are strip clubs, porn, and prostitution. Sex trafficking is todays slavery. Many of those involved in sex trafficking were minors when they first got involved and have been involved for many
An estimated 20.9 million people are currently being trafficked worldwide (The Polaris Project, 2014). According to the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 (TVPA, reauthorized in 2013), sex trafficking is defined as, “A commercial sex act induced by force, fraud, or coercion, and/or in which the person induced to...
The United States is a major port for human trafficking and, “Due to the covert nature of human trafficking, it is difficult to ascertain which countries are the primary source nations for trafficking into the US” (Hepburn). People of all ages and genders are at risk to human trafficking (Hepburn). Women and girls make up about fifty-six percent of the people trafficked for forced labor, while men and boys make up the other forty-four percent; children make up forty to fifty percent of those numbers (Hepburn). Ninety-eight percent of the people trafficked for sexual explorations are women and girls (Hepburn). Children tend to be targeted more than adults because they are much more vulnerable. Human trafficking has different forms, and “While trafficking for the purposes of commercial sexual exploitation is more publicized in the media, it is not the only form of trafficking that takes place in the US” (Hepburn). Trafficking for the purposes of forced labor is just as likely to occur as trafficking for the purposes of sexual exploitation (Hepburn). Many citizens have never heard of human trafficking for something other than sexual exploitation. Hepburn shows that, “Forty-three percent are trafficked for purposes of...
There are 100,000 to 300,000 underage girls being sold for sex in America, and the average age of entry into prostitution is 12-14 years old. Human Trafficking and human smuggling are some of the fastest growing areas of international criminal activity, according to the United Nations. Human Trafficking can be compared to a modern day form of slavery. It involves the exploitation of people through force, threat or deception where Human smuggling is the attempt of transportation or illegal entry of people across an international border. There are real live people that shared their stories of being a victim of human trafficking, like a young female Anya. Human trafficking and Human smuggling is a worldwide issue that the country and a lot of people face.
Sex trafficking is when women, young girls, and young boys are held in slavery and forced into prostitution for the financial gain of others in brothels in the United States, Europe, and other developing countries such as Thailand and the Philippines (Sexual Slavery). It’s happened to many women and children throughout many years in many of these countries for money and more power. Often purchased or kidnapped off the street, women, girls, and boys are trafficked across international
Sex trafficking is essentially systemic rape for profit. Force, fraud and coercion are used to control the victim’s behavior which may secure the appearance of consent to please the buyer (or john). Behind every transaction is violence or the threat of violence (Axtell par. 4). Just a decade ago, only a third of the countries studied by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime had legislation against human trafficking. (Darker Side, par.1) Women, children, and even men are taken from their homes, and off of the streets and are brought into a life that is almost impossible to get out of. This life is not one of choice, it is in most times by force. UNODC estimates that the total international human trafficking is a $32-billion-per-year business, and that 79% of this activity comprises sexual exploitation. As many as 2 million children a year are victims of commercial sexual exploitation, according the the U.S. State Department.-- Cynthia G. Wagner. (Darker Side, par. 4) The words prostitute, pimp, escort, and stripper tend to be way too common in the American everyday vocabulary. People use these words in a joking manner, but sex trafficking is far from a joke. Everyday, from all different countries, people are bought and sold either by force or false promises. Some are kidnapped and others come to America with dreams of a dream life and job. The buyers involved in the trade will do anything to purchase an innocent life just to sell for their own selfish profit. Many people wouldn’t think of a human body to be something you can buy in the back room of a business or even online. But those plus the streets are where people are sold most often. There are many reasons and causes for sex trafficking. The factors behind sex traffic...
Human trafficking occurs worldwide and often involves transnational criminal organizations, violations of labor and immigration codes, and government corruption. Although their circumstances vary; fraud, force, or coercion typically distinguishes trafficking victims from those who were smuggled. Those who are victims of trafficking feel as if they have no choice in what happens to them or the people they know. If they do escape, most face the reality of having no family or community to return back to. As a result, many remain at work in the sex industry instead of facing discrimination in what was formerly known as their home. According to Home Office 2004, 9 out of every 10 women in prostitution would like to exit if they thought it was po...
Have you ever imagined being forced against you're will to do vile and disgusting acts? This is what hundreds upon thousands of women go through a year. $32 billion dollars a year is accumulated by the works of this “underground industry” called Human Sex Trafficking. (Fox2) Kidnapping, manipulating, and selling are three words that can describe what horrific action are taken towards the young victims in this business. Sex trafficking is 90% women and girls. (Sex Trafficking) Over 50,000 women are trafficked into the United States every year. (Sex Trafficking) It happens all over the country, especially in the cracks of America. Sex trafficking is just as big of a problem found in America as it is internationally. The lack of law enforcement towards this social issue has created a persistent business instead of a complete halt to this tragedy.
Sex trafficking is a world wide epidemic. It targets unknowing victims such as women and children enslaving them and exploiting their innocence. Human trafficking is becoming one of the biggest money making organized crimes in the world. The sex trade is one of the most profitable of all current slave trades. Through the age, gender, class, and race many are trapped in a never-ending cycle of coercion and abuse in order to survive in the corrupt society around them. In order to stop this monstrosity in the world, we need to start at the root of the problem. We must bridge the barriers between gender, class, and race in order to respect one another and live in harmony
“The U.S. Congress defined and classified human trafficking into two categories sex trafficking and labor trafficking the TVPA. As stated previously, sex trafficking involves the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for the purpose of a commercial sex act in which a commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the person forced to perform such an act is younger than age 18. A commercial sex act means any sex act on account of which anything of value is given to or received by any person. Types of sex trafficking include prostitution, pornography, stripping, live-sex shows, mail-order brides, military prostitution, and sex tourism,” (Clawson, 2009). The demand in the sex trade is formed by two different things: the male demand and the money made. “The male demand for sexual services sustains the profitability of the sex trade as a multi billion dollar industry,” (Kara, 2009). This is something that is crucial in understanding why the sex trade functions. Since the current state of rehabilitation for former trafficked females has been ineffective, legislation and programs need to be developed to be more effective.
Most people do not associate slavery with sex trafficking, but when you think about it, they are a lot alike. Sex trafficking is similar to slavery as it violates human’s basic rights. People are involuntarily exploited sexually and are victims of physical and psychological pain. These people are used for their bodies in order to gain profit for their owners. The victims of sex trafficking are striped of the right to be free and deserve to have a quality of life. Money and power play a significant role in the industry and awareness can help protect the victims and help prevent this from reoccurring. Sex trafficking should be illegal everywhere and perpetrators should be held highly accountable for their actions and pay for the pain and suffering they have made their victims face. This paper will answer questions to the following:
Human trafficking is run by big business holders who think they have the same mind set as the rest of society. They think that by selling women, they are doing good for them, even though it “is a real life horror that has victimized thousands of people across the globe” (K...
Human trafficking involves some form of forced or coerced sexual exploitation that is not limited to prostitution (Deshpande and Nour, 2013). Sex trafficking has become a significant and growing problem in the US and the larger global community, and is growing among younger women. It affects the society as a whole because of the degradation of human and women’s rights, poor public health, disrupted communities, and diminished social development (Deshpande and Nour, 2013). Human trafficking is a modern-day form of slavery that involves illegal trade of human beings for forced exploitation and is a critical health issue that requires legal attention. Children are innocent human beings and are not able to provide consent for activities that come
