Globalization brought people to more direct contact with the world via modern communications. These days, people are alert to news and events in foreign countries as much as their own (Globalization, n.d.). Modern communications, such as social networks, aid people to know more about their society. Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn are some favored social networks that make it possible to keep up with the society around people and to reach probably with many members of their family and friends. The combination of both efficiency and creativeness of these networks make them a big source of attraction to individuals. Social networks are used as a method to connect people around the globe that plays a strong role in contributing to the rise of globalization. According to the Oxford Dictionaries (n.d.), a social network is a customized website or program that is used to allow communication between people “by posting information, comments, messages, images, etc.” Social networks are types of telecommunication that, like phones, link people abroad, but are used more as a result of its fast and reliable function. It is a double-edged weapon that has both harm and benefits. Regardless of how reliable and dependable it is, the harm and damages it very likely cause are more prominent. Social networks are harming human relationships and communication in many aspects because they lead to false communication, cyber bullying, and the loss of privacy.

In the past decade there has been a dramatic rise in the use of social media as a way of communicating and connecting with friends and family but, it soon reached epic proportions. Nothing happens without being tweeted, posted, or captured to exist in the cyber world for the rest of time. Although social media has moved social interactions into our technology driven world, it comes at a cost. In a erudite and cogent tone, David Brooks, a conservative columnist for the New York Times, warns users of social media and social media companies of the darker side of social media by explicitly arguing that it causes irreversible destruction to our ability to form intimate relationships. At the same time he implicitly claims that these social media tools are not just something we enjoy, it is who we turning into, and if we don’t put a stop to the ever-increasing use of this technology, we will change from human beings to machines that can only live life through a screen.
Social Media can be a great tool, but can also be our worst enemy. The documentary film Catfish and Sherry Turkle’s Ted Talk explore the issues associated with social media and how it affects us. They both describe social media as a tool that can be a problem if used without real life in mind. The film and Turkle's Ted Talk show us how social media tricks us into thinking that our online relationships are as or more meaningful than real life relationships using personas and the illusion of control. It's easy for people to brush it off and say it doesn't happen to them, but this issue associated with social media can happen to anyone who uses social media in any capacity.
An illusion created by online communication, and social media is that the more friends and people you supposedly know the better. A refferance to the common misconception is (Source 1, lines 11-27) where the author states that the amount of close friends in average has gone up since past years. The author then goes on to list the amount of social ties on average from social media, and suggest that the internet is good for society. While in (Source 2, lines 36-53) the author explains the idea that qauntity is not greater than quality.
Shimi Cohen provides insights to how much in daily lives people are being affected by social networks that humans have created in which people are being consumed by each and every day. Reading over Sherry Turkle’s book “Alone Together” it really breaks down the consumption of people with technology with a general idea. Both authors are relatively similar by their break down of connecting one human to another. Painting a clear picture for the idea that people are mistaking an online connection with someone and not being able to realize its not even a true connection. Since anyone can easily hide behind a phone or computer screen and pretend to be someone else. Social networking can connect strangers across the world. As the evolution of communication continues, technology progresses and social networking grows. Social networks like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook have grown to have billions of users. In fact in today’s society, it is necessary or nearly expected to use one if not all of these technological communication networks. The increasing use of social networking has had both a negative and positive effect on communication in relationships. The purpose of this literary analysis is to answer if social networks are helpful or harmful to relationships.
“Social media, a web-based and mobile technology, has turned communication into a social dialogue, and dominates the younger generation and their culture. As of 2010, Generation Y now outnumbers Baby Boomers, and 96% of Gen Y has joined a social network” (Qualman 1). Social media now accounts for the number one use of the Internet, and this percentage is rising bigger every day (Qualman). As a consequence, people are becoming more reliant on social media, which has a led to a number of advantageous as well as unfavorable effects. Social media has nothing but negative effects on people’s minds. Social networking can become very addicting and people can get wrapped up in the drama and excitement of the cyber world. It would only improve our society today if social media never existed to our knowledge. Our society today feels so connected with social media that it interferes with our lives making every task even harder with the temptations.

Social networking is doing more harm than good in society, if traditional and personal interactions continue to be replaced with conversations through online networking sites, it won’t be long before they are perceived as the ‘norm’. Traditional methods of interaction will continue to be at risk if the effects of social media are not realised. Social media is a controversy topic in today’s society. Some people think that social media destroys human interaction and real life human relationships. While others think that social media is a bless to humanity. Social media makes human interaction much more convenient and much faster than real life human interaction, it makes globalization a reality, it gives a chance for introverted people to express themselves, and it also benefit develop international relationships whether its business or social.
Social media is used by many people, young and old around the world as a way to communicate. Our lives have become so busy that it is difficult to maintain family and social relationships. “They use social networking sites including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. On these sites users create profiles, communicate with friends and strangers, do research and share thoughts, photos, music, links and more” (Social Networking). With the use of social media you can be friends with all sorts of people without actually seeing or knowing them. “In many ways, social communities are the virtual equivalent of meeting at the general store or at church socials to exchange news and get updated on friends and families” (Cosmato).
Even though people have different opinions on whether social media has a positive or negative impact on society, it can be said that social media has a positive effect on society as a whole because it lets people communicate with each other easily, it has been said to improve education among children, and has helped improve the economy in the world. One of the main reasons why social media has positively affected our society is because of how it has made communicating with people much easier. “Today, four out of five active internet users maintain at least one social media profile” (Moe, 3). Using these websites, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and etc., people talk about everything with anyone from what they are planning to do, to what they are eating and much more (Moe, 24). We can also send private messages to other users of these websites about personal matters that you just want to discuss with them.
