1.1. What is Social Media
Social Media is defined as any web or media based platform that enables an individual or an agency to communicate interactively and enable exchange of user generated content.
The innovativeness in this form of media , coupled with the speed of information exchange and ease of access, is perhaps the reason behind the immense popularity and quick adoption of this form of media by the masses.
Some of the most popular social media sites worldwide are Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Youtube, Linkedin, etc. Some other social media sites are Flickr, Pinterest, Meetup, Myspace, Slideshare, Uservoice, Blip, Scribd etc.

Also their have been attempts to invade the Privacy of senior politicians or government officials and the Character assassination of individuals. There are instances when the governments themselves are not democratic.
All this has led to disturbing actions of various governments on the issue of social media usage with complete disregard to freedom and democracy. There have been instances of arbitrary blocking of websites/internet, Imprisonment of bloggers, Misuse of Information Technology regulations by law enforcers against critics, political opponents, innocent users and misuse of social networks to track individuals and access private conversations.
Despite significant progress being made in the usage of social media by all the stakeholders, unleashing the power of social media is dependent upon resolution of a number of challenges, some of them being
