The topic I have chosen for this project is Social networking. Which is a type of social media. So what is Social Media? Social is communicating with other individuals and Media is any type of web based program. When you combine the two that’s how you obtain social media. Questions that I intend to cover as I pass through this project. Will consist of what are the advantages and disadvantages in social networking? What programs is considered Social Networking? Why do we use Social Networking sites? And which group is more dominant to use or take advantage of social networking? These specific questions are intended for individuals that use programs such as Facebook, Instagram, twitter, YouTube, etc. Also any adults that are worried about their children. As social networking is growing in the modern technology world. It’s important that we as a community are aware of the possible threats that social networking may bring us. The question is Social networking has benefitted young adults in society or destroying society. That’s the question many are wondering. I will be …show more content…
They consist of a profile and different ways to interact with one another. Some of the programs involve snapping a picture or others making a quick video to interact with other individuals. Now-a-days “75 percent of teens have a social networking site”. According to a 2013 Pew Internet study, teens are sharing more information than ever. The Majority of teens would rather communicate through the internet than face-to-face. Social network websites like Facebook and Myspace are today’s yellow pages. With Facebook being the number choice for teens and a second choice is Instagram for its quick connection to anyone around the world. Lastly, the snapchat app is the third most popular social
Brian Solis the author of Engage: The Complete Guide for Brands and Businesses to Build, Cultivate, and Measure Success in the New Web once said “Social media spark a revelation that we, the people, have a voice, and through the democratization of content and ideas we can once again unite around common passions, inspire movements, and ignite change” (INSERT CITATION).
Social media plays a big role in the majority of people lives. There is conflict on whether it’s more harmful or more helpful. In the article, “Antisocial Networking?” from the New York Times by Hilary Stout dated April 30, 2010, she explains her position of being anti-social networking. She claims that social media takes away the chance for the youth to develop empathy, recognize emotions, and apprehend meanings of facial expressions and body language. Stout fears these skills will only fade away. On the other hand, Melissa Healy explains her reasons for being pro-social networking in her article, “Teenage Social Media Butterflies May Not Be such a Bad Idea” from the Los Angeles Times dated May 18, 2010. Considering social media allows teens to communicate with each other, build social skills, and create opportunities for adolescents, I disagree with Hilary Stout’s position.
According to Nair (2011), “The social media property on the web is exploding and fast becoming a necessary part of the arsenal of any organization. It took 38 years for the radio to attract 50 million listeners, and 13 years for television to gain the attention of 50 million viewers. The Internet took only four years to attract 50 million participants, and Facebook reached 50 million participants in only one-and-a-half years. Facebook, which was originally designed for Harvard students and launched in 2004, has become a phenomenal example of social engagement. By 2009, Facebook had already achieved 100 million monthly active users covering age groups from 13 to 65; by the end of 2010, there were more than 500 million users. (p. 46) With so many people connected through social media and since businesses are dependent on people to thrive, they have been impacted both positively and negatively.
Social networking is relatively new in the technology world. It was introduced in 1997 and several popular sites are: MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter. These sites have attracted millions of users, many of whom have incorporated these sites into their daily practices (Boyd). Of these millions of users, the heaviest are young people. One study suggests that 81 percent of teenagers from the ages of 12-17 use social networking sites (Sterling). These sites allow users to express themselves through a personal profile. Once a profile is created, the user can then make cyber friends. These friends are other users who can now access the original user’s profile information, which in turn, could have negative results. However, many people find these sites to be extremely useful. From showcasing one’s interests to connecting with friends and family, social networking sites are a great way to communicate. Even people who are normally shy in person are able to comfortabl...
Do you know that social media is a virus? A virus that brings positive and negative influences that put people in critical positions in their lives? It 's a virus that’s expected to get rid of, if only the individual is patience, time oriented and devoted. In this 21st century, most of the population is spending time on social networks, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other new social network. Since innovating the Internet, it uses come with some encouraging and damaging effects just like any other invention. Which has flourished speedily, influencing the progress of social media in an outstanding way leading to new social media sites? In the United States, 74% of the population is using comfortable gadgets that have access to the Internet, including cell phones (iPhones and Samsung.) Tablets, computers, and more, with which they can have access to social networks every time, easily and conveniently. Many people believe that social
The effects of social media seems miniscule compared to the real effects that they really intel. He believes that there is a strong correlation between social media usage and the degradation in the quality of performance from students in schools across the United States of America, from the grades of freshman through senior year in high school. It shortens our attention spans, diminishes our vision uses—in terms of far sided, near sided, and peripheral vision—and it’s such a major part of our culture that the majority of us fail to recognize that the very thing that society continuously does is setting them up for failure in the most excruciating ways.
Social networking considerably affects the lives of billions of people around the world, exhibiting its most significant consequences upon adolescents. It exists as a form of modern communication in which people converse through online chats, exchanging photographs, blogging, or updating one’s status. Social networking sites, also referred to as SNS, “are a form of social media in that they rely on digital technology to facilitate communication. These sites can further be explained as networked publics as they move the act of public socializing from face to face interaction to the online domain” (Parker and Boyd qtd. in Livsey 5). These sites frequently interchange with the term social media, which includes any form of mass communication via
There’s no denying that social media has its many pros and cons, but I think that the positive impacts of social media outweigh its negative impacts. One example of how social media has been an influence for social change was during the Arab Spring, a series of uprisings, armed rebellions, and anti-government protests that took the Middle East by storm in early 2011. Social media, especially Twitter, was used as a communication tool; government corruption and injustices were unveiled, protests were organized, and many were rallied to join the cause of Arab Spring activists. Social media’s role in this revolution proved that it can be used to transform society and politics on a global scale. In regards to how we can begin to think critically
It seems online media is overshadowing traditional media… However, traditional media is still trustworthy. Audiences can compare the news they receive [from social media and traditional media] and make conclusions. As traditional media is controlled by authorized organizations, the information is examined properly, it gains higher trust… People tend to use social media to get news, but sometimes this comes from traditional media news that they get online.
Social media is used by many people, young and old around the world as a way to communicate. Our lives have become so busy that it is difficult to maintain family and social relationships. “They use social networking sites including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. On these sites users create profiles, communicate with friends and strangers, do research and share thoughts, photos, music, links and more” (Social Networking). With the use of social media you can be friends with all sorts of people without actually seeing or knowing them. “In many ways, social communities are the virtual equivalent of meeting at the general store or at church socials to exchange news and get updated on friends and families” (Cosmato).
In recent years, social networking sites have rapidly gained popularity among people at all ages. A large number of people have registered and become members of some social networking sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Wechat. Also, people spend a lot of time on these sites chatting, playing games, and making friends. Social networking sites have become a part of people’s life. However, what accounts for the popularity of these sites? As far as I’m concerned, this phenomenon, which social networking sites are very popular nowadays, is caused by three important reasons.
Did you remember to tell your cousin happy birthday on Facebook? Do you know how many people liked your latest picture on instagram? Or how many retweets did you get on your totally relatable and borderline inspirational tweet? As of January 2014, 74% of online adults use social networking sites (Rainie). Also more than 9 out of 10 American teenagers use social media(Blaszczak). Because of social networking we are becoming more connected than ever before. Important information can spread faster than wildfire, and we now have the ability to have friends and relationships all over the world. With the ability to communicate and interact with anyone at our fingertips what could go wrong? Well...lots of things.
Social media is all about staying together and communicating with each other. After all, without being able to communicate, how could we ever get anything done? This brings us to the most common use of social media, social networking. Social networking has made a very big contribution to society, especially over the last few years. There different kinds of social networks, and so many different websites and smart phone apps, but they can be broken down into 7 categories. Those 7 categories are: personal social connections, multimedia sharing, professional soci...
Social networking has increasingly had a huge impact on society. Technology has opened the door to a vast amount of information and to the ability to relay that information to practically anybody at anytime and anywhere. People are constantly checking their email, updating their status on Facebook, sending tweets on Twitter, instant messaging, and texting. The debate of whether the use of social networking is a negative or positive aspect is a continuous one. In the case of Steven Pinker, his essay “Mind over Mass Media” argues that media technologies have a positive effect on mental development. In contrast, Sherry Turkle’s essay “Connectivity and Its Discontents” asserts that technology has a negative effect on interpersonal relationships. Although Pinker makes many excellent points on how technology is improving intelligence and Turkle provides exceptional ideas of how technology is damaging to relationships, neither Pinker nor Turkle provides the best answer to this question due to their lack of credibility and inclusion of logical fallacies. Instead, we should, while aware of the risks and dangers of social networking, use the Internet to its full potential.
With the emergence of Internet, interactive communication in Media Corporation should be more dealt with most traditional media outlets. They used to provide the information only produced by well-disciplined, well-educated and efficient hundreds journalists to their audiences one-snidely. It is obviously admitted that audiences, who have different opinion, have a rare chance to counteract opposite opinions to the media companies by sending letters for opinion pages and implying the idea through ombudsman programs. Unfortunately, when it comes to amount of information, a massively large amount of information flows directly from the media companies to audiences. After being web 2.0 introduced, more and more conventional media had adapted interactive communication methods, which might be revise their webpages in order to be replied by readers and subscribers. Given the prevalence of use of mobile device and social media, interactive communication in the media corporate structure has
