Social networking is known all across the world and the users are increasing. In our society, people feel like social networking is the best way to communicate and meet new friends or keep in touch with old ones. To some people, it’s just a way to see what other people are doing and to catch up with long distant friends and family members. However, only a handful of people have realized the harms of social networking to our society. This society is so naïve about social networking they don’t think about the impact it has on them and ow its hurting you more than helping you Reports from ProCon’s online article “Are Social Networking Sites Good for our Society” states various way of social networking harms society. If there was more supporters and people actually caring about children this would not be going on. As a result, children go weeks and even months of being bullied and tormented at school and social networking. According to Brian Jung’s article “The Negative Effects of Social Media on Society and Individuals” “The devastation of these online attacks can leave deep mental scars.” While other people see this going on and don’t say anything to help them, they ignore it and the victims sit in silence at night contemplating …show more content…
For example, most students procrastinate on their work because they’re on social networks. He would say “Ok I’m only going to be on here for a minute” then that minute turns into a hour next thing you know he forgets all about the assignment. ProCon reports that “Two-thirds of teachers believe that social media does more to distract students than to help them academically.” Students aren’t the only ones using social networks and getting distracted though. ProCon also reports that “74% of American adults online use social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.” By that being said, adults are getting distracted as well. For instance, when adults are at work and it’s a slow day they are on social networks to make the time to go by faster. This is a fact because you see people all over social networks posting pictures or statuses of how bored they are at work. This causes a decrease in customer satisfaction and productivity. As reported by Brian Jung “The Negative Effect of Social Media on Society and Individuals” “Morse claimed that British companies lost 2.2 billion a year to the social phenomenon.” Overall, social networks is a big distraction to our
Some believe that ‘Social networking sites help students do better at school. 59% of students with access to the Internet report that they use social networking sites to discuss educational topics and 50% use the sites to talk about school assignments” (Procon) However, “If the students checked Facebook just once during the 15-minute study period, they had a lower grade-point average”. (Clemmitt) This shows that social media is the main source of distraction which does not allow individuals to focus on their academic work. This is harmful to society because individuals will not be able to completely focus on a task. Thus individuals would complete their tasks with little thought on how they are doing it. Procon has also mention that “People who use social media have a lower grade point average (3.02) social media than people who don't use social media. (3.82) they also tend to get lower test grades”. This shows that the impact social media had on students’ academic career is negative. With a low grade point average students feel no need to push themselves which leads to low self-motivation. Even though some may argue that Social Media has led to educational opportunities, others may argue that it is has done more damage to academics
Social networks were made to help keep people connected. Social networks provide people with access to entertainment, news, free advertising for business owners. These social platforms also provide users to communicate with family abroad. With all these benefits one would think that everyone would be happy with social networking but that’s not the case, in fact some people are against social networks. I think social networks are beneficial for everyone who might use this resource responsibly.
Social media is supposed to be a way to communicate and share our lives with people that we can't see every day. It is a great invention, but it is destroying many people's lives. It has become something extremely dangerous. People feel more comfortable behind a phone or computer screen in the comfort of their home because they can say whatever they want and not be penalized for it, especially when they make themselves anonymous. Social media used to be something great and useful, but because of websites such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter it has turned into something unnecessary and dangerous that is ruining people's relationships, communications, and jobs.
Everyone is obsessed with checking on Facebook or Twitter instead of focusing on the task at hand. Social media has made many people become multitaskers rather than being able to do one thing at a time. Before social media came to be everyone was a lot more productive then they are now. Many people look at multi-tasking as getting more done all at once but when your brain has to switch back and forth between tasks and finding out where they were in that project actually makes it harder to concentrate and in the end people get less done. “Researchers now know our brains cannot focus attention on two things at once,” says Dr. Cantor. Therefore we are trying to do more than one thing but your brain just switches back and forth therefore making everyone less productive in the tasks at hand. Social media being everywhere now a days is the biggest distraction of all. For example there has been so many times I have been trying to get homework done but get a notification on Facebook; therefore, I get on to check it out and next thing I know I haven’t gotten any homework done. Without social media there to be a distraction it would cut down on so much multi-tasking and everyone would be a lot more productive then they are now a
Social media allows you and your friends to publicly share photos, talk, make plans, and give out information about yourself. Those were all positives but could easily be negatives as well. When you receive a friend request on Facebook, the profile pic used could easily be faked and so could the person’s identity. By putting something on social media, you allow others to gain access to your photos, messages, arranged plans, and even your address, depending on what’s on there. Social media effects society in both positive and negative
...ile Steven Pinker believes that social networking is improving society and Sherry Turkle finds it to be harmful to individuals, the real answer lies in-between the two positions. “It is a well-known fact that the web is a valuable asset for research and learning,” stated Sue Scheff in her article “Social Networking Sites Can Limit Interpersonal Skills and Physical Activity,” “…[but] it can also be a very dangerous place” (1). While the Internet is beneficial in gaining knowledge and connecting with others, it will always come with downsides as well because it can become addictive and an easy source for predators and bullies to prey on those who are vulnerable. Ultimately, “it is in our collective interest to ensure that the Internet lives up to its potential as a revolutionary connective medium” (Pariser 11) while being aware of the risks and practicing self-control.
This research is unique because it will give light to the individuals who are against social networking that will not take to consideration that it has any positive outcomes at all and to those who believe that social networking has no downfalls and are too blinded by the social networking to even notice the affects it has on their own lives.
With the advancement in technology in a short matter of time it has impacted the world in many ways such as how the world communicates and our life styles. One of the many revolutionary inventions or evolutions is called social networking sites (SNS). Social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and many more, are where people gather in the internet, create a personalized profile about themselves, and interact with people around the world. With the lack of parental supervision between the ages of fourteen to seventeen, which makes one of largest demographics using social networking sites, these teens could be subjected to mature elements. Young teens between the ages of fourteen to seventeen should not be allowed to have a profile on social networking sites because they do not have the capability to make proper logical decisions.
Social media is so popular that according to a recent article published by forbes.com, “72% of American adults are currently using social media sites; that figure has gone up 800% in just 8 years”(Olenski). Social networking was originally created to simply reconnect people with old high school pals, but in recent years it has evolved into a completely different operation. When social media first originated it was also intended for adult usage, which has in recent years expanded into the usage of all ages. Social media can create a negative affect on lives because it has been proven to be a dangerous addiction, for it takes away interpersonal relationships that are essential in life, and it has been proven to prevent people from being productive in life.
In the end, social networking is the act of expanding one’s social circle by connecting other individuals, specifically in relation with the use of the Internet. It is rather common to find individuals of all ages using social sites to stay in-contact with others. While many can argue that social networking is more beneficial for teens, studies prove that the use of such forms of communication can negatively affect the lives of teens anywhere through its ability to create interpersonal and intrapersonal trials.
The impact of Social Media on Society Technology has come a long way from its existence till today. In today’s modern world, people are surrounded by technology everywhere. In the present, people are surrounded by disrupting technologies every day. Today, innovators are always creating new technologies that will make an impact on the daily lives of millions. Technology has made the lives of many people easier.
It can distract you from your family, work, and school work. It can distract you from special events and moments with your family. You can be so caught up in your sites you’re missing the most important events of your life. It can become an easy distraction from work and school work. Some people may just need to take a ‘break’ and then can get too caught up on social media that they will fail to return to their work. “Many companies have blocked social networks on their office Internet as addicted employees can distract themselves on such sites, instead of focusing on work” (Ta). For those that are in school, grades can begin to drop. Students procrastinate and will choose social media over writing that paper, doing their homework, or studying for a test. Spending too much time on social media can distract you from a certain task. Motivation slowly decreases the more social media is being used. Another big thing that social media distracts people from today is driving. Some people just can’t wait to post a status that they do it while driving. While doing this, it can cause many accidents. It is slowly taking over our
Today technology has created new styles of communication on the internet for us all. This technology has made great impact on everyday life in today’s society. Cyber communications have become hugely popular in the last decade, especially those websites that help people to find new or old friends, keep in touch with families, and even help people to find potential dates! The numbers of people using cyber social networking are growing in millions every year. Cyber social networks have helped people link to each other with common interests, and expand personal ideas and support worldwide. But people are getting too friendly with this technology. Dangers are slowly appearing, and there still have a lot of hidden threats. Cyber social networks are threats to our personal social lives, lead into new addictions, and compromise the security of privacy issues.
Social media has nothing but negative effects on people’s minds. Social networking can become very addicting and people can get wrapped up in the drama and excitement of the cyber world. It would only improve our society today if social media never existed to our knowledge. Our society today feels so connected with social media that it interferes with our lives making every task even harder with the temptations.
Social networking is doing more harm than good in society, if traditional and personal interactions continue to be replaced with conversations through online networking sites, it won’t be long before they are perceived as the ‘norm’. Traditional methods of interaction will continue to be at risk if the effects of social media are not realised. Social networking sites were created as a means of making it easier for individuals to communicate in a timely and efficient manner, they were not created to take over face-to-face communications altogether. The constant use of online networking is doing more harm than good not only individually, similarly through the community
