Social Medias Impact on College Students
Over time, social media addiction in college students all around the world has become a serious problem. Not only is an addiction going on, grades are being severely affected. If this issue continues to be overlooked the statistics will show that college students’ grades will get even worse. Three billion people in the world use at least one form of social media websites. Of those three billion, half of them are in the 18-29 years old. Introducing regulations and making sure that students are not logging onto social media websites as frequently is how social media addiction is going to be fixed.
In today’s society, very few recognize that social media is an addiction because as stated earlier, roughly fifty percent of users are logging onto Facebook daily to begin with. Therefore, nobody is looking to make any changes in Facebook’s usage policies or changes in how college students have made social media an addiction. Social behavior expert Megan Sponcil from Youngstown State University in Ohio states that “about 57% of social network users are 18-29 years old and have a personal profile on multiple social media websites” (4). The statistic that Sponcil points out shows that 19-28 year olds are the ones that are mostly affected by social media addiction. Poor performance in the classroom and a serious addiction will continue if this addiction is not broken.
Social media addiction had not become a real issue until the creation of the multi-billion dollar social networking site MySpace was created by UCLA graduate Tom Anderson in August of 2003. Since then, the social networking sites Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram have been created and all are billion dollar businesses that are ...

Many teens, young adults, and even adults are faced with social media addiction. Do people realize this addiction is a serious problem or is it just simply ignored because it is considered as a “hobby”? These things cannot be ignored especially when it is considered a habit. Social media may have not been looked at as a problem when social networking sites were coming out to the public, but today it is very clear that more people are becoming dependent on social networking sites. It seems as if nowadays everyone has a Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, or Instagram account. It is the norm for the 21st century and it is how people communicate and network today. People log on different social networking sites numerous times a day. Some people argue social media is a hobby, and it is only a habit that is not considered dangerous. Today’s social media has grown quickly and as it spreads more people are becoming addicted and not focused on what really matters in the outside world.
Individuals should understand that the use or nonuse of social media has negative and positive effects on their lives whether they recognize them or not. Students who excessively use social networking applications can be negatively affected because they are spending too much time on these applications rather than paying attention in class, completing homework, studying, s...
Social media is a resource that a majority of people use to keep in contact with their loved ones. These sites are powerful resources because one can post or share something to their personal page and within days it can be shared all over the internet. The leading competitors of social media sites are Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Many people in my generation post every personal detail of their lives, whether it is what they ate that morning, or who their new date is. Now that smartphones are faster than ever, social media is even more accessible with the use of applications. Social media has become an addiction that is plaguing this generation.
Social media is so popular that according to a recent article published by forbes.com, “72% of American adults are currently using social media sites; that figure has gone up 800% in just 8 years”(Olenski). Social networking was originally created to simply reconnect people with old high school pals, but in recent years it has evolved into a completely different operation. When social media first originated it was also intended for adult usage, which has in recent years expanded into the usage of all ages. Social media can create a negative affect on lives because it has been proven to be a dangerous addiction, for it takes away interpersonal relationships that are essential in life, and it has been proven to prevent people from being productive in life.
Social Media has evolved magnificently since the first email sent in 1971. Social media is any form of website or application which enables us to share content with one another with a simple sharing tool. Social media has became an addiction for most, if you were to ask the average student if they were connected to a social networking site about 73 percent would reply with a yes. In addition about 63 percent of people log on to a social media site daily and on average 40 percent log on multiple times a day. Everyone has their own reasons for the use of social media which could include shopping, research, or other personal reason like venting and status updates. Students often connect to social media because majority of students have one so they feel included. Social Media has became an addiction to many of the students who happen to have a profile to a site. They feel the need to always be connected to society. Many of these students grades have either suffered or raised due to having better connections with other students. My essay will attempt to prove that social media has been affecting the children’s education and prevents them from reaching the academic growth they need.
Social media has become an extremely powerful and useful tool that enables people in a modern society to effortlessly interact and socialize with each other via the internet; however, there is an extremely dark and little known side of social media: addiction. Social media has the potential to become extremely addictive to its users. The addictive nature of social media may intensely interfere with users daily obligations in the real world, which may make a recovery process necessary in order to quell the powerful addiction.
There is a common assumption that these groups are capable of taking these new multi-tasking challenges and using them in learning environments to further their education. Yet, this study aims to identify how these groups’ interactions with social media impact other aspects of their lives. According to Marketingcharts.com, a website solely dedicated to statistics and backed by the Watershed Publishing Company, “college students spend about 12 hours a day with media and other gadgets” (“College Students,” 2012). That means in half of a 24-hour day a college student is typically either on the internet or using some form of technology. Simple math dictates that this leaves less time for academic pursuits. The theory that the more time spent with social media and technology, the less time spent in the pursuit of academics can slowly be formed at this point. On the other hand, perhaps the use of new technology and social media has assisted in the pursuits...
Social networks can have a negative effect on a student’s grades. When they are trying to complete their homework’s and assignments, it provides the opportunity and a platform for them to procrastinate. Students instead of studying, they use social media while in studying, doing homework and sometimes in class. These provide distraction to them as the multitasking provides divided attention. It makes students productivity reduces; they go to an extent of disclosing their homework to one another, and interchanging course works material that is considered academic misconduct when it is not allowed. Another problem is filtering of information on which to be trusted and which not to trust(Ortega,

Facebook is one of the most famous social networking websites which has become a part of the daily routine for most college students. This has led to a question amongst researchers whether students’ use of this networking site influences their academic outcomes. This literature review will examine and synthesize the published current research concerning the impact of Facebook on college students’ academic performance. Even though most studies are inconclusive in determining the relationship between Facebook and academic performance, all researchers contribute to understanding the way that Facebook might affect students’ academic achievement. While some studies speculate that Facebook does not impact academic outcomes, most studies show that there is a significant relationship between Facebook usage and college students’ academic performance, which is indicated by GPAs and students’ engagements.
