I was sitting in a lecture for my world regional geography class when my professor asked the students “How many of you sitting in here have some form of social media, whether it is Facebook, Twitter, SnapChat, whatever?” Every single student in that room raised their hand. The next question she asked was “How many of you in here know someone who doesn’t use some form of social media?” This time only one person in that room raised their hand. An older student said his grandpa is the only person he knows that doesn’t use Facebook, or Twitter, or anything else of that sort. In a classroom full of 50+ students it’s crazy to think that only one person in that room could think of someone off the top of their head that doesn’t use social media. That’s the world we live in, dominated by social media, not just in the personal aspects of our lives, but we’re all surrounded by the impact social media has had on our lives. Social media makes it easier for businesses to interact with customers. Before Facebook and Twitter companies could communicate through email or by telephone mostly. Before social media became a big thing, when you wanted to start a business or market a product you’d have to work face-to-face with potential buyers, or investors. Companies use social media to communicate, market, advertise, keep up with trends, and to make sure they’re doing what they need to do to keep customers satisfied. They want the strongest brand possible, and they can create that through the use of social media. Social networking within the business world is a game changer!

Alexis Ohanian once said that "Being effective at social media, whether for business or personal use, means capturing people who have short attention spans. Although social media has provided todays society with instant forms of communication and ways to connect, it also created a new standard for living and has caused problems for many groups of citizens in all walks of life and has caused society to re-think its usage. There are two views about social media, either. It is a positive addition to society and its benefits outweigh the risks, or that social media causes more harm than good and it’s usage should be limited. Exposing students to the power of social media in the classroom is an important part of preparing them to be active and positive digital citizens in a 21st century world. In the last two years, my own students have rapidly been drawn to Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and many other social networking platforms. They upload, share, and connect with others often without any regard to how their digital footprints may reflect them as individuals. Having continuous conversations with students about the choices that they make can lead to positive results. Students don't realize how powerful social media platforms can be in terms of networking, researching, and engaging in academic conversations. It makes me laugh every time I hear them whisper about my colleague Heather's or my Twitter feed. First of all kids, I can hear you. Second of all, yes, social media can be an amazing way to give and exchanged knowledge.
