According to wikipedia.com, Twitter is “an online social networking and microblogging service that enables users to send and read tweets, which are text messages limited to 140 characters.” Essentially, twitter is a social network that is quick and to the point, certainly something to appreciate. Founded in May 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone and Noah Glass, twitter would become a worldwide sensation and capture the attention of millions. The idea, as wikipedia describes, came about when Dorsey wanted to create a text message type service in which he could communicate with a small group of friends. It was originally code named “twttr”, a name that Evan William gave to the project that was “inspired by Flickr and the five-character length of American SMS short codes” (“Twitter”). The name twitter eventually came about, and it was based on the function of the site, which allows short bursts of... ... middle of paper ... ... to update people that there was water found on mars.
The amount of Twitter users is increasing in 2012 from 400 to 500 million users (Holt, 2013). The features, the methods people communicate and collaborate and the impending changes of people communicate and collaborate using Twitter are the main categories for using Twitter as a social media tool as a Web 2.0 platform. Twitter is a type of micro blogging and Social Network Site (SNS) that encourage users to post their latest posts and update their status with friends through simple and instant messaging and Internet tools, for example email (Kwak, Lee, Park & Moon, 2010, p. 1). Twitter’s main feature is to send tweets to other users and the users are able to receive the tweets through the website by the Short Message Service (SMS). Users that are interested in other pages in Twitter are able to follow other users, for example celebrities, business related companies and hobbies.
