Social Media Restrictions
Harmful insults and acts of bullying are no longer restricted to the actual world. Cyber world is now infected with these issues in which technology and private information are instinctively used to constantly harm or bash emotionally hostilities towards a group or one particular individual. Social networks such as Facebook, twitter, and Google plus have been gaining immense popularity in the past years. With the popularity of these sites, the problems of cyber bullying, online sexual predators and accessibility to adult content also continue to grow. The younger generations are becoming more techno-friendly, with electronic devices such as tablets, computers, and cell phones. With this fact younger children are becoming more vulnerable and more likely to be confronted with these problems. These problems and issues of social discriminations are why there needs to be an age restriction or improved rules and provisions in order to prevent this.
Track back to 15 to 25 years ago. An unfortunate student would normally get bullied at school with physical acts of violence, but as soon as that student arrives at his home he or she is presumed safe. Cyber bullying does not allow this luxury. Cyber bullying occurs over the information waves of the internet, with sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google plus. Which is why the guidelines must be improved or that children should not be allowed to access such sites entirely. With a the tools of direct messaging and posting videos cyber bullying can follow children to their home, beyond the school playground, seven days a week 24 hours a day. Google has allowed cyber bullying and sexual content into the lives of children but bullying has sadly been a part of children’s lives for numerous years, how is this new electronic version different from the traditional physical abuse?
We all know that internet is the future of education and therefore the future for our younger generations. The whole point of the internet is to expand the reach for kids and adults of knowledge at interactions. This cannot be done if sexual predators stalk the chatrooms of myspace. This cannot be done if insecure teens are being bashed by the bullies of cyber world. It is impossible if the companies that create these websites do not prioritize the safety of its users. This is why there must be an age restrictions in order to minimize the risks.
The definition of bullying uses broad statements to define the actual meaning. Because of this, people may view the definition differently than others. Bullying can range from physical violence to verbal abuse to even cyberbullying. Most people do not realize how common cyberbullying actually is. Over half of teens and adolescents have been bullied online and almost the same number have engaged in the bullying (“Cyber Bullying Statistics”). Bullying is nothing new but now times have changed because technology has made it possible for teenagers to bully one another without having to be face to face. We live in an era where technological innovation is constantly evolving and the integration of electronic devices for daily functions have become a standard of living. These devices allow users to perform communication electronically by means of text messages, instant messaging programs, email and provides easy access to social networking. People of all ages, especially teenagers have become more reliant on these applications to maintain their social network and connect with others on a global scale. Bullying has been around forever, however with today’s technology bullying has become easier than ever. It is easier to bully in cyberspace than it is to bully face to face. With cyberbullying a bully can pick on people with much less risk of being caught. Bullies are natural instigators and in cyberspace bullies can recruit the participation of additional students who may be unwilling to bully in the real world. Cyberbullying is any harassment that occurs over the Internet. Vicious discussion posts, name calling in chat rooms, posting fake profiles on web sites, and cruel email messages are all ways of cyber bullying. Cyberbullying can be more serious than conventional bullying. At least with conventional bullying, the victim is left alone on evenings and weekends. Many people may think that cyberbullying is not a problem in life; well, think again, it can change a victim’s life forever by just one offensive comment about them. It will make the victim want to commit suicide, drop out of school, and suffer from self-esteem issues like depression and anxiety. We must fight for what is right, the sooner the better. The movement into the digital age has change the behaviors and interactions of minors and it is time our culture to rethink its relationship with the Web and social networking.
Over 2 billion people use the internet today. In North America, 78.6% of the 300 million people that inhabit it are users online. Some of these users are users are children, ranging from ages of 12-17. Of these children, many simply use the internet to do research, complete homework and even play games. However, a large portion of these children use these tools to threaten, harass, or gang up on other kids. This is what we call cyberbullying. The ease of communication due to a significant online advancement has helped move bullying beyond harassment at school or on the playground and into cyberspace. As a result, schools, authorities, corporate organizations and the third sector need to come together to try and alleviate the ongoing causes of cyberbullying, because it is a problem that greatly affects our children, who are the future of tomorrow.
Although technology is rapidly growing in today's world many parents refuse to let their children use social media because of the high risk of being cyberbullied. I believe that minors should be allowed to use social media because it gives them a chance to express who they are and helps them make new friends with the same interests.

State and local lawmakers have taken steps to prevent this type of bullying by making illegal under several criminal law codes. Michele Hamm, a researcher in pediatrics explained, “There were consistent associations between exposure to cyberbullying and increased likelihood of depression.” Cyberbullying became widespread among students with the rapid growth in use of cellular devices and the Internet. With this kind of technology bullies have the ability to send harmful messages to their recipients at any given time. This type of bullying is the hardest to control because it involves students but often happens off school grounds. However, because the evidence is material, students and parents could bring this evidence to the school and local police departments if a situation were to happen. Parents should be mindful of their child’s use of the internet and electronic messaging, cyberbullying usually takes place in a medium in which adults are seldom present (Mason, 2008). Also, instead of sending direct messages to other students, bullies use platforms such as social media and anonymous blogs to post harmful things for others to see. Technology means that bullying is no longer limited to schoolyards or street corners. As technology use begins to increase, so does cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place using electronic technology. Electronic technology may include devices and equipment such as cell phones, computers, and tablets as well as communication tools including social media sites, text messages, chat, and websites. Chris Rowan states the obvious, commenting “a mere 20 years ago, children used to play outside all day, riding bikes, playing sports and building forts” (The Impact of Technology 1). Because so many kids are caught up in the latest technology and no longer care about playing outside, it is much easier to access the internet and therefore talk, and even harass, other kids. Unlike traditional bullying, cyberbullying doesn't require physical strength or face-to-face contact. Many kids say things online to others they would never say in person— this is why cyberbullying is so popular; kids want to feel big and bad, in control, and superior to their peers. The only way to feel like this is to be feared by others.
Cyber bullying and online crime must be put at a stop. Parents and teachers should play a great role in regulating what their kids are doing on social media. Parents give their children smart phones, tablets, and computers but they fail to convey the proper way of using those tools. They should teach them the rules of being on social media by telling them from right to wrong. Parents don’t give their children a car to use without telling them the proper rules of how to drive the car. If they don’t teach them how to drive the car then that child wouldn’t know what to do about his or her car and may lead to an accident. This is the same way of how parents should also teach their kids of how to regulate on social media. There are many privacy settings on these social network sites which some kids are not aware off or simply do not care about. We should put an aware of these settings to them and teach them from right to wrong. Parents and teachers should also encourage their kids to come talk to them if they are facing any type of
Bullying is a worldwide problem and it requires immediate attention because it psychologically affects both the victims and the bullies. Victims may ultimately have suicidal thoughts and bullies will have uncontrolled behaviors that carry on through school and after school, but they can be helped. Although cyber bullying is a big obstacle due to the large-scale usage of internet and the ability to conceal identities, technological advancements and child supervision help to single out these individuals to reduce the amount of bullying that occurs.
