Social media consumes many hours of people's everyday lives. Why? In the simplest explanation, social media can do any and everything by just a few clicks of a mouse. This makes it the most powerful/dangerous tool we have.
Social media allows one to connect with people on all sides of the world. One can talk and interact with people they will never meet in real life. On the other hand, social media can bring people that would never meet up in real life together. This makes social media attractive to an enormous amount of people of all generations. This being said, social media also makes us have a sense of achievement. In my opinion, narcissism is a problem when individuals become absorbed with the self, needing redundant recognition and confirmation from others, while disregarding others. This being said, social media is all about showing off. In general, social media websites encourage self-promotion, as users generate all of the content. The trouble with social media is that essentially everyone reflects an unrealistic portrayal of themselves. In comparison as to when people choose the most appealing photos of themselves to use, they also tend to occupy their social platforms with the most pleasing portions of news about oneself. This also lets others know about our life and have insight into our lives and events happening within them. For example, my family comes from Kosovo, therefore I have many relatives that I have never seen or talked to before. Social media allows me to contact them and see what they are doing on a day to day basis and vice versa. Also, social media has allowed people to come together and stand up in times of crises. For example, in recent times about the school shooting in Parkland Florida, the students are making a heavy protest on social media and have caught the attention of stars like Oprah that are donating money for them to protest to change legislation on gun laws in the United States. On the other hand, extensive use of social media can actually cause addiction to the users. Many people feel obligated to periodically post something on their pages or check others posts as it has become an important part of our lives. I have fell victim to this. I find myself mindlessly clicking through social media which causes me to waste hours of my time and makes me lose productivity and drive. Extreme usage of social media reduces the level of human interaction people have on a day to day basis. Many people talk to people online rather than in “real life” which can really affect one's social skills. Overall, there are many pros and cons and I don’t believe that one way out the other.
