Presidential Elections and Voters
In order for one to become president of the United States, he or she must gain the votes from the public. There are various ways of getting votes. Nominees go through months of campaigning to get the votes necessary to win the state. Some believe that the public makes the decision for president long before the campaigns even start, and others believe that the campaigns are necessary to gain votes for a president. A campaign in itself is not necessary to influence the public's decision. The focus is not whether the campaign has the influential power to change people's opinion, but the focus is on the actual individual who is voting. The individual has the power to choose whether to let the campaign influence his or her opinion or to make the decision before the campaign. There are both cases when the individual makes a decision for president before the campaign starts and when the individual makes a decision for president because of the influence of the campaign. Campaigns do matter in a democratic society and they are important to a certain extent for those who actually follow the campaigns, but they are not as important for everyone.

In America, voting for the President is a privilege and a lie. Many Americans think when they go to the polls in November, they are voting for the President of the United States; but really, they are voting for a group of electors who have pledged to support a nominee for the President. The Founding Fathers were concerned that presidents would always come from a populous state and wondered whether the public would have the knowledge of various candidates necessary to make a wise selection. They did not have access to technology like the internet or smart phones as we do. In most states, as the result of the election, the state awards all its electors to the winning candidate (Belenky 1308). A Presidential a candidate must win 270 Electoral
Before Washington campaigned for president, he just wanted to go home and relax. He first rejected the idea of becoming president, because he thought that if he became president that he would get put in between the legislation in the process of creating the new government. He dealt with this essential problem until the end of his second term as president. Washington realized that the people of America needed someone to lead them, and he was their first choice to be their leader, he decided to run for president. He earned the respect of the nation by leading an army during the Revolutionary War. (George Washington is elected president, 2009.) Politics were quite different back then, since the population of the United States has grown immensely and new laws have been put into place. The president was chosen by the Electoral College, just as it is today, except they chose their electors by each of the
Every four years that a Presidential election comes to pass the Electoral College is responsible for the formal election of both the President and Vice President of the United States. As an example of an indirect election, where people in each state at large vote in order to decide which individuals will be delegated the responsibility of casting votes for President and Vice President in accordance with the popular vote of the state which has entrusted them to provide such representation, the Electoral College works to ensure that smaller states are not denied the right to have the equal power of influence in our national election for President (Neale, 2004). The Electoral College itself has been in existence since it was introduced within the framework of various proposals introduced at the Constitutional Convention in 1787 (Neale, 2004). The Mcgovern-Fraser Commission in 1969, which was known formally as the Commission on Party Structure and Delegate Selection, played a crucial role in amending the practices of political parties in their work within the Electoral framework, in particular changing the way in which states were allowed to select delegates to national conventions (Stricherz, 2003). This would result in candidates having to develop broader campaigns that would need to appeal to voters across any state in which they desired that states delegation officially support their candidacy.
In the year 1789, the first presidential election took place under the new constitution. The changes between then and now are too many to count. There have been amendments to the constitution, technology has enhanced, communication is better, strategies have grown and the world is a different place. In every election, each president had his or her own strengths and weaknesses of their time. In the presidential election of 2012 between Obama and Romney, many economic and personal characteristics held importance on Election Day. In this research paper, I will look at the issues that voters had and discuss how each candidate addressed them. I will also share other important information that contributed to the outcome of the election.
One of the greatest problems America faces is the uninformed voter. Jonah Goldberg wrote an article in which he said, "The ignorance of the typical American when it comes to politics is often staggering." He does not mince his words in saying that he believes that normal people of society are not fit in knowledge to the extent of making a just decision of who should act as President. He is not the first to believe this however. The notion that society must be protected from itself when it comes to electing officials goes back to Ancient Greece.

First, “To be able to become president of the United States, you need to meet just three simple requirements: You must be at least 35 years old, have lived in the U.S. for at least 14 years and be a natural-born citizen.” These are just some of the basic requirements of becoming a president and the first steps to getting your foot in the door.after the first steps of becoming president it becomes a lot harder to get the approval from the rest of the high above people. Another fact,“Due to the Electoral College, voters cast their ballots not for a candidate, but for a slate
In America, political candidates go against one another in a process known as an election in which citizens vote for the next person who "best" fits the position. In addition, there are various amounts of debates on whether a citizen should be compelled to vote. Although some argue if citizens should be required by law to vote, there are exceeding an amount of disadvantages.
Today in America, less than half of young voters between the ages of 18 and 24 vote (TheBestColleges.org). What most of these new adults fail to realize, is that their government depends on them to vote and elect new leaders to represent their country. Many of them make excuses to avoid voting, when really, they benefit most from voting.
Not a day goes past that without hearing about the presidential candidates. The local polls, debates, drama, and the daily attacks people in the political parties. I hear this information whether I want too or not. One can always be up to date when it comes to the upcoming election either on the television news, or radio, and reading about it in the daily newspaper. And the presidential election seems to be what everyone is talking about or using social media to express their own personal sides. Why wouldn’t it be? It’s not like every year we get a new commander and chief. The presidential election is something that Americans looks forward to every four years. People across our nation get to vote and be part of our great democracy in the
If each state has elected officials to make the decision for them why is it so important for the people to go out and vote when our vote the “popular vote” basically gets overlooked. The popular vote is a vote made by majority of the people or as some may call it, the peoples favorite candidate. In the article “Is the Electoral College System Still the Best Mechanism for Electing U.S. Presidents?” Richard Lempert states that “ if democracy means the majority rules, the electoral college is an undemocratic institution, Twice in the last five elections it has delivered the White House to the loser of the popular.” Meaning though these candidates lost by our opinion they won through the electoral college for whatever reason. It continues to state that “In 2000 it gave the Nation George W. Bush, Two weeks ago it gave us Donald Trump, although [Hillary] Clinton will most likely have a more than 2 million vote edge among those who cast ballots.” (Lempert, 2017) Hillary Clinton had the popular vote in majority of the states but due to the electoral college the presidency was handed over to Donald Trump, who we know as a racist individual due to his acts he have shown over time. He wanted to “build a wall” to keep hispanics or foreigners out of the United States when his wife first lady Melania Trump is from a foreign country as well. My personal viewing on Trump is that he a joke and shouldn’t have won
Voter turnout has been declining in the United States throughout history through the potential voters’ personal choice not to vote and ineligibility. According to research a large percentage of individuals are not voting because political parties fail to appeal to the voters and this leads to the voting population losing interest in the campaign, while others postpone registering and by the time they realize their delay the election is upon them.
There are many steps in running for president. Running for president is said to be one of the longest campaigns. Running for President consists of mainly two different parties and which consist of: the presidential primary campaign and the general electoral campaign that follow the party’s national convention. Generally both campaigns take place within the first 10 months of the election year. The primary campaign was mainly used for opening the nomination process to ordinary party members and to delay and postpone the influence of party bosses. During this time there is a process where the candidates go through a “beauty contest” where they are competing for popular votes; however the “popular” votes do not have
People who are uncommitted or torn between the candidates can be swayed by the media on who to vote for. The candidates are aware of the influence of media and often spend a lot of their time staging media so that they will look good on camera and come across good to voters. For example, when Roosevelt used his “Fireside Chats”, he soothed the nation about the economic times and the war by talking on the radio. If a Politian is good they will know how to work the media in their advantage and this is how the majority of our presidents get elected and how they get bills passed. The media focuses of some issues while not focusing on others and that is another way they get things done in politics. Ronald Raegan was a movie star and that significantly helped win the race because he was already so popular and he already knew how to talk to the American people. Certain media outlets will only show democrats and others republican and that influences people on who to vote for. Politics is how a lot of news media gets views because it
