In recent times, social media has become such a dominant part of our society, that over 5 million Instagram photos are uploaded every day, as well as Facebook claiming 1.39 billion active users as of December 31st, 2014. With the risks of cybercrime and bullying becoming more and more predominant, it seems as though Australians are at a constant risk of being manipulated whilst using social media. However, the obvious benefits of social media being used to educate and develop our community, leaves many with the question; is our society benefitting from our constant use of social media?

Studies have shown that more than one in three teenagers having experienced cyber threats online, as well as 1 in 5 Australians being victim of identity theft. As we continue to share our lives on social media, it is becoming increasingly difficult to remain safe from the threat of being manipulated online. Yet why is it that we experience these issues more often on social media then in real life? Many experts agree that it is because many people don’t understand that the impact of their actions online is just as serious as if they were in real life. When a bully victimizes another teenager over social media, they can be unaware of how hurtful their words can be because they are not in face to face contact with them. With social media continuing to develop we must increase our level of education on how to use social media appropriately, as well as safely. When younger generations can apply this knowledge to how they use social media, we will see less cyber bullying, as well as a decrease in the amount of people who fall victim to
