Introduction
Just like the internet changed how we buy goods, research information or organize trips, it also changed the way we interact socially. Social media has become the means by which people can exchange photos and videos, share news, and stories, create blogs with their innermost feelings, and overall participate in online discussions. More than that, social media gives companies, governments or simple individuals to interact with enormous numbers of people.
This essay will give a short overview of the evolution of social media, look at how it affects social interaction paradigms and see what kind of potential it can have socially and economically.
What is Social Media?
The terminology “social media” points to a wide range of Internet and mobile services that give users the chance to participate in online interactions, contribute their own user-generated content or join various communities. The following services are usually associated with social media (also referred to as “web 2.0”)
• Media sharing sites – sites that give users the freedom to post videos or photos (YouTube, Instagram, 220)
• Microblogging sites – where users can share short updates and see various other updates created by others or even celebrities (Twitter)
• Social bookmarking – are sites that allow their users to categorize and share links to other websites (reddit. StumbleUpon)
• Wikis – a collective site where all participants are given the freedom to create or modify any page with the aim of gathering information (Désilets and Paquet).
• Blogs – an online diary where pages are displayed in a reversed chronological order. (WordPress, Tumblr, Blogger)
