What is social media? Social media is mainly a medium that enable people to build relationships and expand their social network circle among people that shares the common interests, opinions, undertakings or even experiences in a virtual world. Social media is something very universal, particularly the common Social Networking Site (SNS) like Facebook (Vogel, Rose, Roberts and Eckles, 2014). It was launched during 2004 and the latest statistics stated that Facebook has roughly 1.39 billion monthly active users now (Facebook, 2014). Not to forget Friendster, the one that triggers the trend of social media. Other common social media also includes MySpace, iTunes, Spotify, Twitter and SnapChat.

Social comparisons occur when the public compare and contrast themselves with others on the capabilities or traits they think it is important (Steers, Wickham and Acitelli, 2014). Like how male differentiate themselves from women, businessman differentiate themselves from politicians. There are two types of comparisons that are discussed in Steers, Wickan and Acitelli (2014) research, namely upward social comparisons and downward comparisons. Upward social comparison is when someone compares themselves to a higher authority and leading to an undesirable result, such as MDD that have been discussed earlier and low self-esteem. On the contrary, downward social comparison is comparing self to a weaker party or less competitive party. Looking back at the 80s or the 90s, children spend their free time outside their house, playing in mud, hanging around in the neighborhood even climbing the trees. As the technology is rapidly taking over the society, the era is changing too. You can’t find any more children climbing trees or playing in the mud now. Children as young as three or four are now having a smartphone or an electronic device as their toy. As for teenagers who are basically all having a smartphone now, they tend to speak less, type more. They converse their conversation now into messages that can be send through free applications in the smartphones like Whatsapp, WeChat or Kakao Talk. They do not enjoy talking as much as the last generations do; they express their emotions through emoticons and barely show their real expressions in the real situation. For a very common example, u can find teenagers now only hold onto their phone during eating
