As our society progresses and advances, the media options that we have available to us will widen. The old and new media that we currently have in our society is a media that alters the way we live our lives through changing our lifestyle, choices, and habits. Our old and new media is something that people are able to use simultaneously, but is it something people are able to do efficiently? This paper will discuss the interrelated use of old and new media specifically looking at social media and textbooks, or learning in general. Many college students like to have social media tabs or outlets open as they study or complete their work. Of course each student and case will vary depending on the student, but social media is generally found to be of something positive. According to “Can Social Media Impact Learning?” by Lisa Gonzales and Charles Young, social media is something that is found to increase student engagement, foster collaborative community learning environments, as well as promote teaching and learning (paragraph 1). Social media increases student engagement as it “helps students share information, communicate ideas, and create videos to extend and enhance their learning and demonstrate their mastery of content and skills” enabling the students to connect with each other (paragraph 2). With the combined and shared ideas amongst the students, they are able to feed off one another for a creative and innovative collaboration that never would have happened without social media. In Social Media: Usage and Impact, Ronald A. Yaros argues that individuals who are given the opportunity to interact with each other learn from each other. Yaros states that this comes from the social learning theory of which “views psychological functioning as a continuous reciprocal interaction of person and environmental determinants” (pg. 58).
