In our general society today, many people are very focused on themselves, how to make themselves better, what cute clothes are on sale, who won the game last night. Youth and adults today all have social media in our society, no matter what social media, everybody most likely has one form of social media that they use. Very recently, people have started using these social media platforms as ways to create awareness for certain topics that need to be discussed as a whole. Things such as Black Lives Matter, Homophobia and Mental Health are all topics that are needed to spoken about and have recently surfaced. This police brutality has been, very unfortunately, been focused towards the black race. This racism has made the idea of Black Lives Matter surface. Black Lives Matter is a movement that many people have been trying to promote and get people to join. On twitter and many other social media platforms, the hashtag “#blacklivesmatter” was created, to help promote the cause. Many people on social media will come out and straight up say that a hashtag will not save lives or help anyone. Although that is true, a hashtag cannot change the entire world, it still creates awareness. This hashtag has helped people come together, created rallies, protests and has helped people fuel their anger and fear together on one platform. Also recently, many people who are not at all being affected by any oppression have created a hashtag “#alllivesmatter”. Although I agree that all lives really do matter, these people are completely missing the point of Black Lives Matter. “Let’s be clear, we said: Black Lives Matter. We never said only Black Lives Matter. That was the media, not us. In truth, we know that All Lives Matter, we’ve supported your lives throughout history. So if today’s society is so accepting, why can’t everyone accept everyone for who they are? Homophobia is a large issue for as long as time can tell. Recently, this issue has started to resolve, with people starting to get comfortable with the subject and not care as much as to who other people are. Many elders and people who come from a generation of these elder still have the hate for the LGBTQ+ community. Many very religious people still argue that it is a sin to even accept those people, and that they would burn in hell. There’s also the younger generation, all with smartphones and social media platforms who are very homophobic and like to state it through their social media. Often you can see a teenage boy getting mad about two men kissing in a picture. That’s ridiculous, how could you possibly care about who another person loves? Morgan Freeman once tweeted, “I hate the word homophobia. It’s not a phobia. You’re not scared. You’re an asshole.” Homophobia, transphobia, biphobia have also all been disregarded on social media due to the fact that people believing that awareness is not something needed, so the topic gets ignored completely. Many celebrities do support this community and are all about sending love, so they could easily use their huge social media platform to help raise awareness.
